Chapter 17 - Shadows Behind Bars

Inside the stark, fluorescent-lit segregation block of the maximum-security federal penitentiary, Victoria Bellacourt sat on a cold steel bunk, staring blankly at the chipped concrete wall opposite her cell.
The multi-million-dollar art collections, the private vineyards, the designer wardrobes, and the corrupt politicians who once bowed to her every command were all gone, reduced to ash and distant memories. Here, wearing a coarse orange jumpsuit and stripped of every ounce of superficial status, she was nobody.
Footsteps echoed down the metal-grate walkway. A prison guard stopped outside her cell, sliding a single piece of legal mail through the narrow slot in the heavy steel door.
“Mail call, Bellacourt,” the guard muttered callously before walking away.
Victoria didn't move for several minutes. Finally, her frail, trembling fingers reached down to pick up the crisp white envelope. She didn't need to open it to know what it contained: the final federal asset forfeiture decree, officially dissolving the Bellacourt family trust forever.
With shaking hands, she tore open the envelope and scanned the legal jargon. At the very bottom of the document, printed in bold, undeniable type, was the signature of the person who had orchestrated her total and complete destruction:
*Claire Bellacourt, Director of State Forensic Investigations.*
A choked, hysterical sob tore from Victoria’s throat as she crumpled the paper into a tight ball and hurled it across the cell against the cold steel door. She had spent her entire life teaching her children that weakness was a sin, that lower-class people were disposable, and that money could buy absolution for any crime.
In the end, her arrogance had blinded her to the one person who possessed the intelligence, the courage, and the unwavering resolve to bring her entire empire crashing down.

The quiet accountant she had locked in a bathroom to protect a wedding photo op had turned out to be the judge, jury, and executioner of her family's dynasty.
Outside her cell window, through the thick reinforced wire mesh, the sun dipped below the horizon, plunging the cell block into deep, inescapable shadow.
