Chapter 9 - Shadows in the Safe House

The amber security warning on my laptop flashed rhythmically, casting an eerie orange glow across the dark living room of the federal safe house. The heavy oak front door was reinforced, the windows were bulletproof ballistic glass, and state troopers patrolled the perimeter. Yet, knowing Victoria Bellacourt’s desperate state of mind, security felt like an illusion.

“Mara, look at the timestamp on this server log,” I pointed at the screen, my finger tracing the glowing lines of code. “They didn't just try to view my personal records. They downloaded my current GPS coordinates and medical facility registry.”

Mara leaned in closely, her expression tightening into a razor-sharp glare. “That means someone inside the local courthouse or police department has taken a bribe from Victoria’s remaining offshore accounts. They’re selling our location.”

Before Mara could reach for her encrypted radio to call tactical backup, a sharp, piercing beep echoed from the hallway security monitor. Outside the perimeter gate, two unmarked black sedans had just pulled up alongside the driveway, their headlights cutting sharply through the dense fog.

“We’ve been compromised,” Mara stated instantly, her voice completely calm under pressure. “Claire, grab the baby bag and your encrypted hard drive. We’re moving to the secondary extraction point right now.”

“What about the troopers outside?” I asked, scooping my sleeping daughter out of her bassinet and clutching her tightly to my chest.

“They’ve already been neutralized or redirected,” Mara said grimly, unholstering her Sig Sauer pistol and checking the magazine. “Trust me, Claire. Move!”

We sprinted down the back hallway toward the subterranean secure garage, where an unmarked federal SUV waited with its engine idling. Just as we reached the heavy metal fire door, a deafening explosion shattered the front living room windows upstairs. Flames erupted through the glass, followed by the sound of heavy tactical boots kicking open doors.

“They’re inside!” I gasped, my heart hammering wildly against my ribs as I shielded my daughter’s face from the smoke and falling debris.

Mara shoved me into the back seat of the SUV, tossing a bulletproof tactical vest over my lap before slamming the door shut. She jumped into the driver's seat, shifting the gear into a violent reverse as bullets began to ping loudly against the rear armored plating of the vehicle.

“Hold on tight!” Mara shouted, flooring the gas pedal. The SUV roared backward, smashing through the automated security gate and sending metal debris flying in all directions as we rocketed out into the winding mountain road.

Through the rearview mirror, I watched the safe house burn brightly against the dark night sky. The Bellacourts had crossed the line from corporate white-collar criminals to violent fugitives. They weren't just trying to protect their stolen fortune anymore—they were trying to eliminate the witness who exposed them.

“Are you alright, Claire?” Mara shouted over the roaring engine as we tore down the dark highway.

“We’re safe,” I breathed, looking down at my baby girl, who miraculously remained fast asleep despite the chaos. “But Victoria just signed her own death warrant in a federal court of law. There’s no plea deal for attempted assassination of a federal witness.”

Mara smiled grimly, gripping the steering wheel tighter. “Good. Because I was running out of patience with her anyway.”
