Chapter 15 - Echoes of the Past

A crisp autumn breeze swept fallen leaves across the courtyard outside the state forensic bureau as I walked toward my car at the end of a grueling twelve-hour workday. My daughter was safely tucked away with her trusted nanny at our new, highly secure suburban home—a peaceful sanctuary far away from the oppressive, gilded cages of the Bellacourt estate.
As I unlocked my car door, a sleek black sedan pulled up quietly alongside the curb. The tinted window rolled down smoothly to reveal a woman I hadn't seen since the disastrous wedding night: Celeste Bellacourt.
Gone was the multi-thousand-dollar Vera Wang wedding gown, the pristine designer makeup, and the haughty, untouchable smirk that had defined her existence. Celeste looked exhausted, her hair pulled back into a simple ponytail, wearing a plain oversized hoodie that swallowed her frame.
“Claire,” Celeste’s voice trembled slightly as she gripped the steering wheel, her eyes bloodshot and filled with a bitter mix of humiliation and grief.
I stopped, resting my hand calmly on the car door frame, my expression completely neutral. “Celeste. You’re violating your probation parameters by being near a state government facility.”
“I don't care,” Celeste choked out, tears spilling over her eyelids as she stared through the windshield. “My husband annulled our marriage within forty-eight hours of the arrest. Our bank accounts are frozen, our friends won't return my phone calls, and my mother is sitting in a maximum-security prison cell cursing your name every single day.”
“Your mother brought this upon herself, Celeste,” I said evenly. “And your husband married your family’s money, not you. You should have paid closer attention to the ledgers instead of spending your time planning lavish weddings funded by embezzlement.”
“You ruined us!” Celeste suddenly snapped, her voice breaking as ugly, raw fury flashed across her face. “We had everything! We were untouchable!”
“No, Celeste,” I corrected her sharply, stepping closer to the car window so she could see the absolute, unshakable conviction in my eyes. “You were built on stolen money, built on lies, and built on the arrogant assumption that you could crush anyone who got in your way. I didn't ruin your family. I simply brought the truth to light.”
Celeste stared at me, her lower lip trembling violently as the harsh reality of her ruined life finally settled in. She had been raised to believe her last name made her royalty, only to discover it was nothing more than a brand of shame.
“She’s coming after you, you know,” Celeste whispered, her voice dropping to a terrified shudder. “Even from prison... my mother hasn't given up. She has people on the outside. People who don't care about federal laws.”

“Let them come,” I replied calmly, opening my car door and sliding into the driver’s seat. “I survived your mother’s worst on the most chaotic night of my life. Whatever she has left is just a dying echo.”
I closed the door, started the engine, and drove away into the cool evening twilight, leaving the shattered remnant of the Bellacourt dynasty fading into the rearview mirror forever.
