Chapter 7 - The Virtual Confrontation

The screen flickered with static in the secure safe house living room as Evan stared back at me with wide, panicked eyes. His lower lip trembled uncontrollably as he realized that the woman looking back at him was no longer the quiet, compliant wife he had taken for granted for five long years.
“Claire, please!” Evan pleaded, slamming his cuffed hands down onto the metal interrogation table with a loud, metallic clatter. “You can’t do this to me! We have a life together! We’re a family!”
“A family?” I repeated, letting out a cold, humorless laugh that made him physically flinch. “Is that what you call locking a thirty-four-week pregnant woman in a filthy bathroom so she wouldn't ruin your sister's precious photo op? Is that what you call conspiring with your mother to embezzle forty million dollars while forcing me to live under constant psychological intimidation?”
“My mother manipulated me into it!” Evan stammered frantically, sweating profusely under the harsh fluorescent lights of the holding cell. “She controlled the family trust! I didn't have a choice! If I didn't sign those transfer orders, she would have cut me off entirely from the family fortune!”
“Oh, spare me the pathetic sob story, Evan,” I replied, crossing my arms over my chest. “You didn't just sign routine transfer orders. You personally set up three complex shell companies in the Cayman Islands under fictitious employee names. I audited every single transaction myself. Your digital fingerprint is stamped all over the financial wreckage.”
Evan’s face went completely slack. The brutal realization that I wasn't just an ordinary accountant—that I was the forensic mastermind who had legally dismantled his family’s entire empire—finally shattered his delusions.
“You... you knew all along, didn't you?” Evan whispered, his voice cracking into a pathetic whimper. “You knew before the wedding even happened.”
“I knew for two months,” I answered calmly. “I stayed quiet because I was gathering the final layers of evidence required for an airtight federal indictment. Your wedding just happened to be the most convenient public venue for the grand finale.”
“Claire, please... think of our baby,” Evan cried, attempting his final, most desperate manipulation tactic. “She needs a father! She can't grow up with her father rotting in a federal penitentiary!”
“My daughter will grow up knowing her mother had the courage to stand up against corrupt criminals,” I said firmly, my voice steady and resolute. “And she will never, ever have to look at a man who valued a wedding cake and a photo op over her life.”
Before Evan could scream another plea, I nodded to Special Agent Mara Voss standing beside the monitor.
“Cut the feed, Mara.”
With a crisp click of a button, the screen went black, plunging Evan back into the silent, isolated darkness of his holding cell. I turned my head toward the bassinet, where my daughter continued to sleep peacefully, completely untouched by the chaos of the world outside.

“Well handled, Claire,” Mara said with a respectful nod, closing her tablet. “Now that the psychological leverage is completely gone, let’s talk about the civil asset recovery and what comes next for your safety.”
“I’m ready,” I said, standing up tall. “Let’s take back everything they stole.”
