Chapter 10 - The Secret Meeting in the Holding Cell

Three days after the court ruling, I received a cryptic voicemail on my burner phone from an unknown number. It was Detective Vance—no relation to Ethan, the lead investigator on the criminal case. He informed me that my father had requested an urgent, private meeting behind closed doors at the county detention center.
He claimed he had something crucial to tell me—something concerning our mother’s untimely death five years ago.
The mention of our mother sent a cold shiver down my spine. Mother had passed away suddenly from a severe, unexplained respiratory failure in her sleep at the family estate, just weeks after changing her will to leave her personal savings directly to me rather than letting Dad control the entire estate. At the time, the coroner ruled it natural causes, citing a sudden asthma attack.
I didn't tell Ethan immediately. I drove to the detention center alone, sitting in the secure visitor’s booth separated by a thick sheet of reinforced Plexiglas.
Dad was brought in by a correctional officer. He looked hollowed out, his orange jumpsuit swimming on his shrunken frame. He sat down heavily, picking up the heavy plastic telephone receiver with shaking hands.
I picked up my receiver, staring at him through the glass. 'Detective Vance said you wanted to talk about Mother,' I said, my voice cold and flat.
Dad’s eyes watered, his lower lip trembling violently. 'Claire... I didn't want to tell you this. I swore I’d take the secret to my grave to protect the family name.'
'Protect the family name?' I echoed, a bitter laugh escaping my lips. 'Dad, you embezzled my inheritance, you covered for Brooke when she tried to kill me, and you punched me in the face. What family name is left to protect?'
Dad covered his face with his cuffed hands, letting out a ragged sob. 'It wasn't just Brooke who had a temper, Claire. Mother... your mother found out that I had drained her private savings account to fund Brooke’s trust fund and my failing construction business. She threatened to divorce me and report me to the federal authorities for financial fraud.'
My breath hitched in my throat. The room seemed to spin around me. 'What are you saying, Dad?'

'I'm saying... Brooke was there,' Dad whispered, his voice cracking into a tortured wail. 'Brooke overheard the argument. Mother suffered from severe asthma. Brooke knew where Mother kept her emergency rescue inhaler. When Mother went into respiratory distress during the argument, Brooke didn't call 911... and she didn't hand her the inhaler. She watched her suffocate, Claire. And I... I helped cover it up to protect Brooke from juvenile detention.'
The receiver slipped from my numb fingers, clattering against the plastic shelf. The horror of the revelation crashed over me like a tidal wave, washing away any lingering doubt about who my sister truly was.
