Chapter 12 - The Exhumation Order

Judge Henderson didn't hesitate when Ethan’s legal team presented the new evidence in chambers. Backed by Dad’s sworn, recorded confession from the detention center and a dossier of financial motives compiled by forensic accountants, the court issued an immediate order for the exhumation of our mother’s remains at St. Jude’s Cemetery.

The operation was conducted quietly at dawn, away from the prying eyes of the media and internet bloggers. I stood beneath a black umbrella in the cool morning mist, watching the somber crew work with quiet precision. Ethan stood right beside me, his arm wrapped securely around my waist, providing a steady anchor against the emotional weight of the morning.

Aunt Sylvia stood a few paces away, her face etched with grim sorrow. 'I always suspected Richard had something to do with her sudden decline,' Sylvia murmured quietly, her eyes fixed on the damp earth. 'She was vibrant, healthy, and terrified of what Richard and Brooke were doing to the family finances. But Richard always controlled the narrative.'

'Not anymore,' I whispered, watching the metal casket being lifted carefully from the vault.

The forensic pathology team transported the remains to a secure state laboratory in Richmond. Three agonizing days later, the official preliminary report landed on Ethan’s desk.

The findings were definitive. Our mother had not died of a natural asthma attack. Her bronchial tubes contained lethal, concentrated traces of the exact same synthetic botanical compound Brooke had sprayed into my face on my wedding day—administered in a high-dose aerosol mist while she slept, designed to mimic a catastrophic asthma attack.

Brooke had practiced her crime five years before she ever brought it to my wedding.
