Chapter 11 - The Conspiracy Unravels

The revelation about our mother’s death transformed the entire legal landscape. What began as a civil dispute over a stolen trust fund and a botched wedding prank had escalated into a full-scale homicide investigation.

I drove straight from the county detention center to Ethan’s downtown office. When I walked through the glass doors of Vance Technologies, my face pale and my hands trembling, Ethan took one look at me and immediately cleared his executive schedule, ushering me into his private conference room.

I repeated every word my father had confessed through the Plexiglas partition. Ethan listened in absolute silence, his jaw tight, his eyes dark with a lethal intensity.

'If your father’s confession is true—and we can corroborate mother’s medical examiner files from five years ago—then Brooke didn't just commit attempted murder at our wedding,' Ethan said, his voice dangerously low. 'She committed premeditated murder against her own mother, and your father was an accessory after the fact.'

'We need to exhume the body,' I said, my voice steadying as the shock gave way to an unyielding desire for justice. 'We need a formal independent autopsy. Medical technology has advanced enough in five years to detect residual synthetic bronchoconstrictor compounds or signs of oxygen deprivation even after cremation or burial.'

'Leave that to me,' Ethan said, pulling his laptop toward him and dialing a direct extension. 'I’ll retain the top forensic pathologist on the East Coast. And I’ll have our legal team file an emergency motion with the district attorney to freeze all remaining bail options for Brooke.'

As Ethan worked the phones, organizing a legal tsunami that would crush my sister once and for all, I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Washington skyline. The sun was setting, casting long golden shadows across the pavement below.

They thought they could use me as a doormat, a piggy bank, and a punching bag forever. They had miscalculated. The wedding day wasn't the end of my story; it was the beginning of their reckoning.
