Chapter 9 - The Counter-Suit and the Asset Freeze

The civil court hearing in Fairfax County Circuit Court was packed to capacity. Reporters, legal bloggers, and curious onlookers filled the wooden benches, whispering excitedly as Ethan and I walked through the double doors, flanked by our legal team.
I wore a sharp, charcoal-gray tailored pantsuit, my hair styled in a sleek professional bob that neatly concealed the fading greenish-yellow bruise still lingering on my left cheek. My broken tooth had been replaced with a permanent porcelain crown that felt strong and secure.
Brooke sat at the defense table across the aisle, flanked by a tired-looking court-appointed public defender who looked like he wanted to be anywhere else on Earth. Brooke’s makeup was caked on thickly to hide the dark circles under her eyes, and her designer pink dress had been replaced by a cheap, off-the-rack beige sweater that made her look washed out and desperate.
Judge Henderson, a stern-looking jurist with decades on the bench, banged his wooden gavel once. 'Case number CV-2026-4892: Vance versus Hawthorne. Proceed, counsel.'
Ethan’s lead litigator, Marcus Vance—no relation, but a legendary civil trial attorney—stepped up to the podium. 'Your Honor, we are moving for an emergency summary judgment and immediate asset freeze on all remaining properties, bank accounts, and digital assets currently held in the name of Brooke Hawthorne, funded directly through the illegal misappropriation of our client’s maternal trust fund.'
Brooke’s public defender leaped to his feet. 'Objection, Your Honor! This is an overreach! The defendant claims these funds were gifts given freely by her father—'
'Gifts cannot be given from accounts embezzled under fraudulent power of attorney,' Judge Henderson interrupted smoothly, flipping through the forensic audit report submitted by Ethan’s team. 'Furthermore, Mr. Vance, I see here that the defendant is also facing criminal charges for chemical assault and reckless endangerment during the plaintiff's wedding ceremony.'
'Correct, Your Honor,' Marcus replied smoothly. 'We have submitted high-definition security footage, medical records from St. Anne’s emergency department, and sworn eyewitness testimony from responding law enforcement officers.'
Brooke couldn't contain herself any longer. She stood up abruptly from the defense table, her voice shrill and breaking with hysteria. 'It’s a conspiracy! They’re lying! Claire has always been jealous of me because she’s boring and nobody loves her! She faked the allergy just to steal my dad and ruin my life!'
Silence fell over the courtroom like a lead weight.
Judge Henderson stared down at Brooke over the rim of his reading glasses, his expression carved from granite. 'Sit down, Ms. Hawthorne, or I will hold you in direct contempt of court and have the bailiff remove you in handcuffs.'
Brooke’s knees buckled slightly, and her public defender practically yanked her back down into her chair, his face pale with mortification.

'Motion for summary judgment granted,' Judge Henderson announced, striking his gavel with a sharp, echoing crack. 'All assets, bank accounts, and properties associated with the defendant are hereby frozen pending full criminal and civil restitution.'
I looked across the aisle at my sister. She was shaking silently, tears streaming down her painted face, realizing for the first time in her life that her tears couldn't buy her way out of this.
