Chapter 5 - The Confiscated Assets and the Legal Trap

The heavy metal door of Trauma Bay 4 swung shut behind the departing officers, taking Dad’s muffled curses and Brooke’s hysterical sobbing with them into the hallway. The sudden silence in the room felt profound, like the quiet after a violent storm had stripped a landscape bare.
I let out a long, shuddering breath, tasting the metallic tang of blood and adrenaline. My jaw throbbed with a dull, sickening ache every time I swallowed, reminding me of the broken tooth resting uncomfortably against my tongue. Slowly, I reached up and pulled the oxygen cannula away from my nose, tossing the clear plastic tubing onto the mattress.
Ethan stepped closer to the bed. The terrifying, ice-cold fury that had paralyzed the room moments before melted away, replaced by an agonizing, heartbroken tenderness. He sank down onto the edge of the hospital mattress, gently taking my uninjured hand in his warm palms. His thumb brushed softly over my knuckles, avoiding the IV tape.
'I am so sorry, Claire,' Ethan whispered, his voice cracking slightly around the edges. 'I should have stayed inside the bridal suite. I should have never left you alone with them for even a second.'
'It’s not your fault, Ethan,' I replied, my voice raspy and soft. 'You didn't know they would cross this line. Nobody could have predicted they'd turn my wedding into a literal crime scene.'
Ethan looked down at my bruised cheek, his jaw tightening again. 'They crossed every line years ago, my love. We just kept hoping they would eventually grow up. But today proved they are beyond redemption.' He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a sleek leather portfolio. 'While you were stabilizing, I had my corporate legal team initiate an immediate asset and financial audit.'
I blinked, looking at him in confusion through my swollen eyelids. 'An audit? Of what?'
'Of everything,' Ethan said calmly. 'Your father’s real estate holdings, his construction business, and the trust fund your grandmother left behind when she passed away—the one your father managed on your behalf.'
A cold chill ran down my spine, replacing the lingering heat of the allergic reaction. 'Dad was supposed to hand over the entirety of that trust fund on my thirtieth birthday. He claimed the accounts were tied up in low-yield bonds and real estate investments that couldn't be liquidated without heavy penalties.'
'He lied,' Ethan said simply, opening the leather portfolio and sliding a stack of printed bank statements and corporate filings onto my hospital tray. 'My forensic accountants spent the last forty-five minutes pulling public records and bank transfers. Your father didn't invest your trust fund in bonds, Claire. He used your two hundred and fifty thousand dollars to fund Brooke’s extravagant lifestyle, her luxury apartment lease in Georgetown, her designer shopping sprees, and—ironically—the down payment on the very commercial real estate property he uses for his failing construction company.'
I stared at the numbers printed on the paper. The columns of figures danced before my eyes, confirming a betrayal so deep and systemic that it made the physical blow from Dad’s fist feel almost trivial by comparison.
'He stole my future to buy Brooke a playground,' I whispered, the words tasting like ash in my mouth.
'He didn't just steal from you; he committed grand larceny and fraud under power of attorney,' Ethan corrected, his eyes gleaming with cold, calculated strategy. 'And because I had my corporate legal team coordinate with the district attorney’s office while the police were arresting him, your father’s primary business accounts have been frozen under suspicion of money laundering and asset misappropriation.'
The door clicked open again, and my bridesmaid, Chloe, poked her head inside, holding a large manila envelope and my phone. Her eyes were red-rimmed from crying, but her posture was resolute.
'Claire, Ethan,' Chloe said softly, walking over to the bed. 'The police took Brooke’s statement, but before they let her leave with her lawyer, I downloaded something from the security cameras outside the bridal suite. The venue manager gave me the raw digital files.'
Chloe handed my phone to Ethan. He unlocked it with his thumb, tapped the screen twice, and turned it toward me.
On the high-definition screen, crystal-clear footage played of the bridal suite hallway. We watched, frame by frame, as Brooke pulled the silver atomizer from her purse, practiced spraying it into the air, and deliberately stepped through the doorway to coat my skin with the botanical toxin. We saw every malicious grin, every calculated smirk, and every second of her premeditated assault.

'That’s not just aggravated assault,' Ethan murmured, watching the video loop a second time. 'That’s attempted poisoning with a deadly chemical agent, aggravated by hate crime statutes due to targeting a documented medical disability.'
He looked up from the screen, meeting my eyes with a fierce, unwavering devotion. 'They wanted a war, Claire. Now, they're going to get one.'
