Chapter 4 - The Cold Fury of Ethan Vance

For three endless seconds, nobody breathed in Trauma Bay 4. The air felt thick, heavy with the electric realization that a line had been crossed—a line so absolute and unforgiving that no amount of family manipulation or patriarchal blustering could ever stitch it back together.
Ethan took his first step into the room. It was slow, measured, and deliberate, the movement of a predator closing in on cornered prey. The two police officers followed closely behind him, their hands resting naturally on the black tactical utility belts strapped around their waists, their eyes scanning the room for potential threats.
Dad tried to recover his composure, forcing a tight, nervous smile onto his face as he lowered his raised fist and wiped his palm against his tailored trousers. 'Ah, Ethan, my boy,' Dad stammered, his voice pitching higher than normal. 'Just... just in time. We were having a family discussion. Claire had a little anxiety attack, you see, and she got a bit confused about... well, family matters. Everything is under control now.'
Ethan didn't look at my father. His gaze remained locked entirely on me, tracking the fresh, purple swelling across my left cheek and the small smear of bright crimson at the corner of my lips. When his eyes finally dropped to the hospital sheet where my blood had dripped, a muscle in his jaw clenched so hard I thought the bone might snap.
He stopped walking three feet away from my bed. He didn't rush to hug me or shower me with frantic questions; his focus was laser-sharp, operating on a level of controlled, terrifying precision that came from years of building and protecting an empire.
'Officer,' Ethan said, his voice terrifyingly calm, smooth as winter ice, without once breaking eye contact with me. 'Did you see what just happened through the glass partition?'
The lead police officer, a veteran sergeant with graying hair and a sharp, no-nonsense demeanor, stepped past Ethan and into the room. 'Yes, sir, Mr. Vance,' the sergeant replied clearly, tapping the small black recording device clipped to his tactical vest. 'My partner and I observed the entire interaction through the observation window. We saw Mr. Richard Hawthorne strike his daughter, Ms. Claire Hawthorne, across the face with a closed fist, causing visible physical injury.'
Brooke’s face lost every trace of color. The glossy SUV brochure slipped from her fingers, fluttering down to land softly on top of my ruined wedding dress in the corner. 'Wait—no! That’s not how it happened!' Brooke shrieked, her voice cracking into panic. 'She was screaming at us! She provoked Dad! She’s manipulative! She faked her allergy attack just to ruin my wedding—well, my engagement day—and make us look bad!'
'Shut up, Brooke,' Ethan said. It wasn't a shout. It was a flat, lethal command that cut through her hysterics like a scalpel.
Ethan finally turned his head to look at my sister. The look in his eyes made Brooke physically recoil, taking two stumbling steps backward until the back of her legs hit the metal supply cart. 'You sprayed a known, life-threatening allergen directly into your sister’s face on her wedding day because she refused to buy you a luxury vehicle,' Ethan stated, his voice devoid of any human warmth. 'That isn't a family dispute, Brooke. That is premeditated aggravated assault with a chemical agent.'
'It was a joke! A prank!' Brooke stammered, her voice shaking violently as she looked toward Dad for rescue. 'Dad, tell them! Tell them it was just a family joke!'
Dad tried to step forward, puffing out his chest to regain his paternal authority. 'Now see here, Ethan! You do not speak to my daughter that way in front of law enforcement! This is a private family matter! In our family, we handle our own disputes behind closed doors, and Claire deserved to be disciplined for her intolerable disrespect—'
'Mr. Hawthorne,' the sergeant interrupted, stepping squarely into Dad's personal space and pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt loop. 'Step away from the bed and place your hands behind your back.'
Dad’s eyes bulged in utter disbelief. 'Are you out of your mind? I am her father! I have every right to—'
'You have the right to remain silent,' the sergeant recited coldly, snapping the first handcuff around Dad’s right wrist with a sharp click. 'Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. Turn around.'

As the second cuff locked into place, Dad let out a strangled cry of outrage, glaring at me with pure venom. 'You ungrateful, treacherous bitch!' he screamed as the officers began marching him toward the door. 'I gave you life! I fed you! And you let them arrest your own father over a worthless car?'
I didn't flinch. I reached up, touched my swollen cheek, and looked my father dead in the eye for the very last time.
