Chapter 11 - The Phantom Investor

With Solstice Hotel Group thriving and international expansion underway, Northstar Capital became the epicenter of high-stakes finance. Yet, success of this magnitude inevitably draws hungry predators from the shadows. One crisp autumn morning, a strange acquisition bid landed on my desk—a multi-million dollar tender from an anonymous shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands called 'Aegis Holdings.'

Mara strode into my office, her expression unusually tense, carrying a thick red dossier. “Claire, we have a complication. Aegis Holdings isn't just a random shell company. We traced the intermediary transactions back through three layers of offshore trusts, and the ultimate beneficiary is someone from your past.”

I looked up from my tablet, my brow furrowing. “My past? The Vances are locked up or bankrupt. Who else could possibly have the capital to mount a hostile takeover attempt against our recent acquisitions?”

“Julian Vance,” Mara said quietly. “Grant’s estranged uncle—the one Richard legally banished from the family business twenty years ago after a bitter dispute over inheritance.”

I stared at her in disbelief. “Julian? I thought he lived permanently in Zurich and had nothing to do with the family.”

“He had nothing to do with them publicly,” Mara corrected, flipping open the dossier to reveal a photograph of a sharp-featured, silver-haired man with cold, calculating eyes. “According to our intelligence, Julian has been quietly buying up distressed Vance debt for over a year. He’s been waiting for Richard and Grant to destroy themselves so he could swoop in and pick up the pieces of the empire for pennies. When you dismantled Vance Hospitality and handed the assets to Northstar, you accidentally ruined Julian’s master plan to reclaim the family dynasty.”

A slow, cold realization washed over me. “So now he’s coming after Northstar Capital to get back what he believes is rightfully his.”

“Precisely,” Mara nodded. “He’s weaponizing short positions against our stock and attempting a hostile buyout of our European subsidiaries. He thinks you’re just a successful startup founder who got lucky with a viral scandal. He doesn't realize he’s walking into a buzzsaw.”

“Send a message to Julian’s primary broker,” I said, a dangerous glint appearing in my eyes. “Tell him Northstar Capital accepts his challenge. Let’s see how much capital he has left after we short his primary European holdings into oblivion.”
