Chapter 15 - The Unyielding Verdict

I picked up the leather folio from the desk, flipped open the heavy parchment pages, and scanned the embossed legal seals. The documents were authentic—the unassailable master deed to the Vance ancestral estate, complete with international notary stamps and independent trust verification.

I closed the folio and looked up at Julian, who stood waiting like a condemned prisoner hoping for a royal pardon.

“The documents are real,” I said softly, setting the folio back down on the glass. “And your logic is fascinating, Julian. But you made one fundamental miscalculation.”

Julian’s brow furrowed slightly, a flicker of unease crossing his weathered face. “What miscalculation?”

“You assumed I wanted your family’s ancestral estate,” I replied, walking slowly around the desk until I stood just a few feet away from him. “You thought I was fighting a war of acquisition—that my goal was to accumulate the wreckage of the Vance dynasty and wear it like a crown.”

“Isn’t it?” Julian asked, his voice tightening. “You took their hotels, their corporate accounts, their market share—”

“I took those things because they were business assets tied to fraudulent loans that threatened innocent employees,” I interrupted, my voice sharp and unwavering. “I didn’t destroy your family out of greed, Julian. I destroyed them because they believed they could treat a human being like garbage, smash her face into a wedding cake, and laugh while recording it for social media clout.”

Julian stared at me, the arrogant veneer finally cracking entirely.

“I don’t want your ancestral estate,” I continued, pointing a finger at the leather folio. “And I certainly don’t make deals with corporate criminals to help them escape federal prosecution. Mara!”

The office door swung open immediately. Mara stepped inside, flanked by two armed federal security agents wearing dark tactical vests with Department of Justice insignias.

Julian spun around, his eyes widening in horror as he realized he had walked straight into a trap. “You… you knew I was coming.”

“When your Swiss broker tried to liquidate your secondary accounts this morning, federal investigators tracked your private flight manifest,” Mara said smoothly, holding up her tablet. “We’ve been waiting for you to hand over physical evidence of hidden trust assets within our jurisdiction. Thank you for delivering the deed directly to us.”

The federal agents stepped forward, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around Julian’s wrists before he could even utter another word. As they escorted him toward the private elevator, Julian looked back at me once, his face twisted in a mixture of fury and absolute defeat.

“You haven’t won, Claire,” Julian snarled as the elevator doors began to close. “The world will never let you forget what you started.”

“Let them try,” I whispered into the empty room, turning back toward the floor-to-ceiling windows where the rain had finally stopped, leaving behind a clear, breathtaking view of the city lights.
