Chapter 14 - The Final Bargain

I remained standing near the floor-to-ceiling windows, my arms crossed over my charcoal blazer, looking down at Julian Vance with absolute composure. The two security guards stationed outside the open elevator doors kept their eyes locked on him, ready to intervene at the slightest twitch.

“You didn’t fly in from Zurich just to offer architectural compliments, Julian,” I said, my voice steady and cold. “You lost forty million dollars in a botched short squeeze yesterday morning. You’re ruined, your shell company is under federal investigation, and your family legacy is burning to ash. Why are you standing in my foyer?”

Julian let out a dry, humorless chuckle, shaking his head as he stepped slowly into the living room, stopping a few feet away from my desk. “Pride is a very expensive affliction, Claire. Richard had it, Grant had it, and frankly, I had it too. We looked at you and saw an outsider—someone we could manipulate, absorb, and discard when convenient.”

“And you learned your lesson too late,” I replied smoothly.

“Not entirely too late,” Julian corrected, reaching slowly inside his wet trench coat. The security guards instantly tensed, their hands dropping toward their tactical belts. Julian raised his hands slowly, showing an empty leather folio, then placed it gently on the edge of my glass desk. “Inside this folder is something neither Mara nor the federal marshals managed to uncover during the raids.”

I didn’t move toward the folio. “What is it?”

“It’s the original master deed and ownership ledger for the historic Vance ancestral estate in upstate New York—the crown jewel of the family holdings, held in an independent foreign trust that neither Richard nor my name is attached to,” Julian said quietly. “Legally, it belongs to Grant by default inheritance. But Grant is going away for a very long time, and the federal government is looking to seize everything connected to his social security number.”

“And you’re offering it to me?” I raised an eyebrow, suspicion sharpening my gaze. “Why? You hate me for destroying your financial network.”

“I don’t hate you, Claire. I respect survival,” Julian said, his eyes locking onto mine with chilling intensity. “I want to buy my way out of federal prosecution. I’m giving you the master deed, clear and unencumbered, along with the foreign bank routing codes to the remaining family trust. In exchange, I want your corporate legal team to ensure my name is formally excised from any pending criminal indictments.”

I stared at the leather folio for a long, silent moment. The ancestral estate was worth at least thirty million dollars in prime real estate alone, not to mention its symbolic value as the ultimate monument of Vance pride.

“You’re willing to sell out your own family’s ancestral home just to save your own skin?” I asked, a faint note of disgust in my voice.

“The Vances taught me one fundamental truth, Claire,” Julian smiled bitterly. “Blood doesn’t mean anything when the bank account hits zero.”
