Chapter 13 - The Uninvited Guest

Following the catastrophic collapse of Aegis Holdings, Julian Vance disappeared from public view, retreating back to his Swiss seclusion as his financial network dissolved under federal scrutiny. Northstar Capital emerged from the proxy war stronger, wealthier, and more untouchable than ever before.
It was a rainy Friday evening. I had decided to stay late at the penthouse, enjoying the soothing sound of raindrops tapping against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows while reviewing international architectural blueprints for our upcoming Mediterranean resort expansion.
Suddenly, the private security intercom on my desk chimed—not with the polite ring of a scheduled courier, but with a harsh, insistent buzz directly from the ground-floor security desk.
I pressed the receiver. “This is Claire Morgan. Who is authorizing this ring?”
The head of building security’s voice came through, sounding tense and apologetic. “Ms. Morgan, I am deeply sorry to disturb you at this hour, but you have an unannounced visitor in the lobby. He refused to provide identification, but he forced his way past the front desk claiming he has information regarding your former husband, Grant Vance.”
My hand tightened around the receiver. “Grant is already awaiting federal sentencing. What kind of information could someone possibly have at this hour?”
“He says it concerns a hidden asset trust that federal marshals missed during the initial raid, and he insists on speaking with you personally before he gives it to the press,” security replied. “Shall we remove him, or do you want us to send him up?”
A cold, sharp curiosity flickered in my mind. If there was another hidden asset holding belonging to the Vances that could ensure absolute finality to their legal ruin, I wanted to know about it.
“Send him up,” I instructed calmly. “And have two security guards wait outside my private elevator doors.”
Ten minutes later, the private elevator chimed. The doors slid open to reveal a tall man wearing a dark trench coat with the collar turned up against the rain. As he stepped into the brightly lit foyer, he lowered his hood, revealing a face I recognized instantly from old family photographs in the dossier Mara had compiled.
It wasn’t a courier. It was Julian Vance himself.
He looked older than his photographs, his silver hair damp from the rain, but his eyes carried the same predatory, unyielding glare that had defined the Vance family for generations. He stood in my foyer, looking around my minimalist penthouse with a mixture of disdain and grudging respect.

“You have quite a fortress here, Ms. Morgan,” Julian said, his voice deep and raspy. “It took considerable skill to dismantle my nephew’s life and my brother’s empire. I had to come see the person who finally brought the Vance name to its knees.”
