Chapter 8 - The Press Conference

The press conference was held in the grand auditorium of the financial district’s convention center. Over a hundred journalists, financial analysts, and television crews packed the room, their camera lenses gleaming under the harsh stage lights like a wall of mechanical eyes. The scandal surrounding #CakeGate and the subsequent collapse of Vance Hospitality had become the biggest national news story of the month.
I walked out onto the stage accompanied by Mara and Marcus Sterling. A low murmur rippled through the audience of reporters as flashbulbs exploded blindingly in my face. I wore a tailored midnight-blue suit, my posture upright and unyielding. The pearls around my neck—the ones my mother had given me—shone softly in the light.
I stepped up to the microphone, adjusting it slightly before speaking.
“Good morning,” my voice echoed clear and steady across the auditorium. “Over the past week, public attention has been captured by a viral video documenting my wedding day—a day that began with celebration and ended with an act of public humiliation and physical assault by my former fiancé, Grant Vance.”
Silence blanketed the room. You could hear a pin drop.
“Many people have asked why I walked away immediately, why I didn’t cry, why I didn’t stay to negotiate,” I continued, my gaze sweeping across the sea of cameras. “The answer is simple: I built my life, my reputation, and my company through relentless hard work and absolute self-respect. I refused to let anyone reduce me to a decorative asset or a financial lifeline for a failing, corrupt family dynasty.”
Flashes went off continuously. Reporters frantically typed on their laptops.
“Today, Northstar Capital, in partnership with Sterling Equity, has successfully acquired all primary assets of Vance Hospitality through legal receivership and debt restructuring,” I announced, watching the shock register on reporters' faces. “Furthermore, forensic audits uncovering systemic financial fraud and asset concealment by Richard Vance have been handed over to federal prosecutors. The era of corporate bullying and entitlement in high society is over.”
A barrage of shouted questions erupted instantly from the floor.
“Ms. Morgan! Is Grant Vance facing criminal charges?”
“Ms. Morgan! What is your message to women trapped in toxic, abusive relationships?”
I raised a hand, silencing the chaos with a single gesture. “My message is simple: never let anyone convince you that you are trapped. Walk away. Reclaim your power. Because when you walk away from toxic control, you open the door to true freedom.”

I turned and stepped away from the podium, leaving the media scrambling to process the tectonic shift in power that had just redefined the city’s financial landscape.
