Chapter 18 - The Coastal Chase

The black sedan accelerated, roaring out of the fog and slamming its bumper against the rear of my car. The vehicle fishtailed across the wet asphalt, tires squealing in protest.
I fought for control, steering hard into the skid, and whipped my car off the main highway onto an old logging trail leading toward the rocky cliffs overlooking the ocean.
The sedan followed close behind, its engine screaming in the darkness.
I killed my headlights, cut the wheel hard to the left, and ducked my car behind a dense thicket of towering pine trees, cutting the engine completely.
Silence descended instantly, broken only by the rhythmic crashing of ocean waves against the jagged rocks below.
A moment later, the black sedan sped past my hiding spot, its brake lights glowing red as it realized I had vanished into the woods. The driver turned around slowly, creeping back down the trail with high beams sweeping frantically through the dark trees.
I unbuckled my seatbelt, opened the glove compartment, and pulled out my father’s encrypted satellite phone. I dialed a direct emergency code connected straight to the federal task force that had helped me take down Raymond.

“This is Chairwoman Elena Vance,” I said steadily as the line connected. “I am being actively pursued on Route 4 coastal cliffs. Dispatch units immediately. I have the target’s license plate.”
Within minutes, the wail of sirens echoed across the coastal highway. Red and blue lights cut through the fog like a beacon of absolute authority.
