Chapter 8 - The Fallout

By noon, the news had hit Wall Street: *Vance Global Restructures, Elena Vance Assumes Control Following Family Fraud Scandal.*

The corporate offices were buzzing with activity. Employees who had spent years walking on eggshells under Marcus’s tyrannical outbursts now breathed a collective sigh of relief. I sat in my father’s old corner office, looking out at the panoramic view of the city skyline.

The heavy oak desk still smelled faintly of my father’s pipe tobacco. On the corner sat a framed photograph of Dad and me taken when I was twelve years old, before Marcus and Raymond turned our family into a battlefield.

My executive assistant, a sharp young woman named Chloe, knocked softly on the open door.

“Chairwoman Vance, you have a visitor in the private reception room,” Chloe said, checking her tablet. “It’s Vanessa.”

I raised an eyebrow. “Vanessa? I thought her accounts were frozen.”

“They are. She came alone. She says she has information that could help with the federal restructuring, but she insists on speaking to you directly.”

I tapped my pen against the desk. “Send her in.”

A minute later, Vanessa entered the office. Gone was the arrogant socialite wearing diamonds she couldn't afford. She wore a plain, unbranded beige trench coat, her hair unstyled, looking defeated and fragile. She didn't sit down until I gestured to the leather chair across from the desk.

“I heard you took control of the board this morning,” Vanessa said quietly, her voice devoid of its usual sharp edge. “Congratulations. You survived.”

“I didn't just survive, Vanessa. I cleaned house,” I replied, lacing my fingers together on the desk. “Why are you here? If you’re asking for money or legal representation, save your breath.”

“I don't want your money,” she whispered, opening her handbag and pulling out a small, encrypted micro-SD card. She placed it carefully on the desk. “This belongs to Raymond. Marcus kept a duplicate in our apartment before he was arrested. It contains every secret deal, every bribe paid to local politicians, and every shell company Raymond used to buy off minority shareholders over the past decade.”

I looked at the tiny black chip, then back at her. “Why give this to me? This is the final nail in Raymond’s coffin. He’s your husband’s uncle.”

Vanessa let out a bitter, hollow laugh. “Marcus called me from jail this morning. Do you know what he said? He didn't ask how I was going to pay rent or buy food. He screamed at me because the federal agents seized my personal jewelry box to pay off his bail debts. He threw me under the bus the second things fell apart.”

She looked up, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. “Raymond and Marcus used me as a shield, Elena. They treated me like a trophy when things were good and discarded me the moment the ship went down. I’m done going down with men who only care about themselves.”

I picked up the micro-SD card, sliding it into a secure reader on my desk. Files began downloading instantly onto my private terminal.

“If this data checks out, it will ensure Raymond spends the rest of his life behind bars,” I said softly.

“Good,” Vanessa said, standing up and pulling her trench coat tighter around herself. “Put them both away. I’m catching a flight out of the country tonight. You’ll never have to see me again.”

As she walked toward the door, I watched her go, realizing that greed truly was a prison of its own making.
