Chapter 4 - The Dinner Invitation

The next morning, the local news channels were already broadcasting the headline: *Corporate Heir Marcus Vance Arrested in Multi-Million Dollar Embezzlement Scheme at Vance Global.*

My phone buzzed incessantly on the kitchen island. Reporters, distant cousins, and business partners flooded my inbox with frantic messages. I ignored them all. I sat at the kitchen table with my mother’s letter, the old journal, and a cup of black coffee, watching the rain streak down the windowpane.

At ten o'clock sharp, the doorbell rang.

I didn't rush. I walked slowly through the foyer, unlocking the heavy oak door. Standing on the porch, looking shaken and desperate, was Vanessa. Her designer coat was damp from the rain, and her makeup was smeared beneath her eyes.

“Elena,” she breathed, taking a tentative step forward. “Please. We need to talk.”

“You shouldn’t be here, Vanessa,” I said, my hand resting on the edge of the door. “Marcus is behind bars. Your bank accounts have been frozen by federal investigators. There’s nothing left for you here.”

“I don't care about the money,” she lied smoothly, though her eyes darted nervously toward the driveway. “Well, I mean… I care about clearing Marcus’s name. Elena, you know he’s impulsive, but he’s not a criminal. You can drop the charges. You’re the executor now; you have the power to stop this.”

“I have the power to tell the truth,” I replied coldly. “And the truth is that your husband embezzled millions, and your lavish lifestyle was built on stolen bread.”

Vanessa’s facade cracked. Her lips tightened into a thin, angry line, and the desperate widow act vanished in an instant.

“You think you’ve won, don’t you?” she hissed, stepping closer, ignoring the rain. “You think sitting in this gloomy house makes you queen of Vance Global? Marcus told me everything about you. You’re weak, Elena. You spent your whole life changing bedpans while we lived in the real world.”

“The real world?” I raised an eyebrow. “Is that what you call living off embezzled funds and pretending to be elite country club royalty?”

“Open your eyes, you stupid little girl,” Vanessa snapped, her voice rising over the sound of the rain. “You think Marcus acted alone? You think those shell companies in the Caymans were just his idea? Raymond helped set up every single transaction!”

I kept my face completely neutral, hiding the surge of triumph inside me. My mother’s letter had pointed to Raymond, but hearing Vanessa confirm it out loud was the missing puzzle piece.

“Uncle Raymond?” I asked, feigning shock. “Are you saying Raymond was involved?”

Vanessa realized she had said too much. Panic flickered across her face as she stepped back. “I… I didn’t mean that. I’m just grasping at straws. Please, Elena, just let us talk. Raymond wants to meet you tonight at the Grand Hotel restaurant to settle everything quietly, without a public scandal.”

“Tell Raymond,” I said softly, pulling the door closed until only a narrow crack remained, “that I don't do quiet settlements. If he wants to talk to me, he can come here. And he better bring his own lawyer.”

I shut the door in her face, locking the deadbolt with a satisfying click.
