Chapter 9 - Whispers in the Dark

With the micro-SD card decrypted and handed over to federal prosecutors, the legal net around Raymond tightened beyond escape. Grand jury indictments dropped by the end of the week, detailing three decades of corporate corruption, insider trading, and financial extortion.

Yet, even with the board secured and the criminals behind bars, Vance Manor felt hauntingly empty at night.

I sat alone in the dim study, sipping a cup of herbal tea while reviewing the estate's philanthropic portfolio. Dad had always funded local community clinics and scholarship funds in secret, a legacy I intended to expand tenfold.

Suddenly, a soft tap echoed from the hallway window facing the sprawling estate gardens.

I froze, setting my teacup down on the mahogany desk. Vance Manor was located on a heavily secured private acreage surrounded by brick walls and motion-activated security cameras. No one should have been anywhere near the private garden at midnight.

I stood up silently, slipping a heavy brass paperweight into my coat pocket. I crept across the Persian rug and peeked through the heavy velvet drapes.

A hooded figure stood outside the French doors, frantically tapping against the glass.

I didn't call security. Instead, I unlocked the brass latch of the French door and pushed it open a few inches, keeping the security chain securely fastened.

“Who is there?” I demanded, my voice cutting sharply through the night air.

The hood dropped. In the pale moonlight, I saw a woman I hadn't expected to ever see again. It was Claire—the woman my mother’s journal had named as Raymond’s co-conspirator from thirty years ago, the woman who had vanished into Europe with millions in stolen hush money before I was even a teenager.

She looked older, her face lined with exhaustion and terror, but the sharp, predatory eyes were unmistakable.

“Elena,” Claire whispered, her voice trembling violently. “Open the door. If you don't let me in, they’ll kill us both.”

“Who?” I asked, my heart hammering against my ribs. “Who is coming for you, Claire?”

“Raymond’s partners,” she sobbed, pressing her hands against the glass. “The people who funded Apex Holdings. They aren't just corporate criminals, Elena. They’re international syndicates. And now that Raymond is locked up, they think you have the master ledger.”

Before I could answer, a piercing screech of car tires echoed from the front gates down the private drive. Headlights cut through the distant trees, sweeping across the manicured lawn toward the manor.

Claire’s face twisted in sheer panic. “They’re here.”
