Chapter 2 - The Shadow of Vance Global

The silence in the study was suffocating. Every relative who had spent the last hour glaring at me now shifted uncomfortably, their eyes darting between Marcus and the incriminating documents scattered across the floor.

“Marcus,” Aunt Linda whispered, her hand trembling as she clutched her pearls. “Is this… is this true? Did you steal from your own father’s company?”

“Shut up, Aunt Linda!” Marcus roared, his face turning a furious crimson. He kicked a stack of bank statements away. “This is garbage! Elena is a bitter, manipulative liar who fabricated these documents because Dad wouldn’t pay off her student loans ten years ago!”

“My student loans were paid off a decade ago, Marcus,” I replied calmly, crossing my arms. “Unlike your mounting gambling debts in Atlantic City and your secret loans with private lenders who charge fifty percent interest.”

Vanessa stepped in, her voice shrill. “How would you even know about that? You’ve lived like a hermit in this dusty house, catering to a bitter old man who didn’t even love you!”

“He loved me enough to make sure his life’s work didn’t end up in the hands of a parasitic grifter and his trophy wife,” I retorted, stepping toward her. Vanessa instinctively recoiled.

Attorney Price cleared his throat, commanding the room’s attention back to the legal reality. “The bank investigators here today, Mr. Arthur Vance Jr., are not just witnesses. They are representatives of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s financial crimes division, working in conjunction with our corporate audit team.”

One of the men behind Samuel stepped forward, flashing a badge. “Mr. Marcus Vance, you are currently under investigation for corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and elder financial exploitation. These documents establish a clear paper trail connecting Vance Global funds to offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands under your control.”

Panic finally broke through Marcus’s arrogant facade. The color completely vanished from his cheeks, leaving him looking sickly and hollow. He looked around the room, expecting Uncle Raymond or someone else to step in and defend him, but the relatives had backed away, forming a wide circle around him as if he carried a contagious disease.

“You planned this,” Marcus whispered, staring at me with pure venom. “You watched me take the money. You and Dad sat here and watched me hang myself.”

“Dad gave you rope, Marcus,” I said softly, remembering the endless nights I sat by his bedside while he wept over his son’s betrayal. “You just chose to tie the noose.”

Before Marcus could lunge at me again, the front door swung open with a resounding crash. Two uniformed police officers stepped into the foyer, flanked by a detective holding a warrant.

“Mr. Marcus Vance?” the detective asked, his voice echoing through the quiet hallway.

Marcus stumbled backward, knocking over a heavy floor lamp. “No. No, this is a mistake! My lawyer—!”

“Your lawyer is standing right here, Marcus,” Samuel Price said coldly, snapping his briefcase shut. “And I advise you not to resist arrest.”

The officers moved swiftly, pinning Marcus’s arms behind his back and clicking the steel handcuffs into place. As they dragged him past the study doors, Marcus screamed curses at me, his voice bouncing off the high ceilings until the front door slammed shut, cutting off the noise.

Vanessa burst into hysterical tears, sinking onto the sofa while Aunt Linda hurriedly gathered her handbag, murmuring about needing to check on her oven. Within ten minutes, the study was empty except for Samuel, the investigators, and me.

I walked over to the window, watching the police cruiser's red and blue lights flash against the pristine white roses lining the driveway. My lip was still stinging, and the blood on my black dress had dried into a stiff, dark stain.

“You did well, Elena,” Samuel said quietly, walking up beside me. “Your father would have been proud.”

“He wasn't proud, Samuel,” I murmured, looking out at the fading twilight. “He was heartbroken. And so am I.”
