Chapter 3 - The Hidden Compartment

With Marcus detained and the relatives fleeing like rats from a sinking ship, the house finally grew quiet. The heavy, oppressive atmosphere that had hung over Vance Manor for months seemed to lift slightly, replaced by a cold, clinical emptiness.

Samuel Price and the investigators stayed for another hour, cataloging the remaining contents of the safe and securing the flash drive. Before leaving, Samuel handed me a heavy brass key that looked entirely different from the one I used earlier.

“Your father asked me to give you this specifically after Marcus was dealt with,” Samuel said, his expression solemn. “He said there was one final secret he couldn’t put in writing.”

“What is it?” I asked, turning the cool brass over in my palm.

“Open the baseboard panel behind his desk,” Samuel replied, buttoning his wool coat. “Goodnight, Elena. Call me if you need anything at all.”

After the front door clicked shut, I stood alone in the study. The grandfather clock ticked steadily in the hallway. I knelt behind the heavy mahogany desk, shining the flashlight from my phone along the dark oak baseboards.

Sure enough, there was a subtle seam in the wood—a sliding panel that had been painted to match the rest of the wainscoting. I pressed my thumb against the hidden latch. With a soft click, the panel slid open, revealing a velvet-lined compartment tucked deep into the wall.

Inside lay a single, aged leather-bound journal and a heavy glass vial containing a clear amber liquid. Beneath them rested an old, unopened envelope addressed in my mother’s handwriting.

My breath hitched. My mother had passed away twenty years ago under mysterious circumstances—circumstances that Marcus and I had never been allowed to investigate. Dad had always claimed she died of a sudden heart failure, but looking at the envelope now, my hands trembled as I lifted it out.

I broke the yellowed wax seal and pulled out a folded letter. The ink was faded, written in my mother's elegant, looping cursive.

‘To my dearest Elena,’ the letter began. ‘If you are reading this, it means Arthur has passed, and Marcus has shown his true colors. I never wanted you to carry the burden of our family’s sins, but the truth can no longer remain buried. Marcus is not your father’s biological son. He is the son of Raymond—your uncle Raymond—and a woman named Claire who blackmailed our family decades ago…’

I staggered backward, hitting the edge of the bookshelf. Books tumbled to the floor in a muffled thud.

Uncle Raymond? Marcus wasn't just a spoiled thief; he was the biological son of the uncle who had championed him all these years, hidden away inside our family under a scandalous web of lies and deceit.

I kept reading, my eyes scanning the frantic lines.

‘...Raymond and Claire engineered a scheme to take over Vance Global. When I discovered their plot, Claire tried to poison me. Arthur saved my life, but the damage to my heart was already done. He raised Marcus as his own to keep the peace and protect our corporate empire from a hostile takeover, but Marcus inherited his biological father’s ruthless greed.’

The journal beside the letter contained detailed financial records, medical reports, and handwritten confessions dating back thirty years. It wasn't just an inheritance dispute anymore. It was a multi-generational war, and I was holding the nuclear launch codes.
