Chapter 1 - The Descent

The scent of chlorine and expensive marble hung heavily in the private indoor natatorium of the Sterling Estate, a sterile sanctuary of wealth and hidden malice. Clara stood near the edge of the crystal-clear water, her rounded belly pressing against her light pink sweater as the cold draft from the ventilation system sent a shiver down her spine. Victoria Vance, impeccably tailored in a sharp violet pantsuit that mirrored the bruised ambitions of her soul, stared down at her with dead, calculating eyes. There was no hesitation in Victoria's movements, only the cold, mechanical precision of a predator closing in on its prey.

"Say goodbye to your little inheritance, Clara," Victoria whispered, her voice slicing through the ambient hum of the pool filters like a razor-sharp scalpel.

Before Clara could process the warning, a pair of manicured hands shoved her violently forward. The world tipped sideways. The marble floor vanished beneath her sneakers, replaced by an empty expanse of air. Clara screamed, her arms flailing wildly as gravity dragged her downward. She hit the water with a deafening crash, the shock of the freezing temperature driving the air straight from her lungs. Panic surged instantly, a white-hot terror for the unborn child growing inside her. Bubbles erupted around her as she sank into the deep end, her pink sweater billowing like a cloud of smoke beneath the blue surface.

From the edge of the pool, Victoria watched with folded arms, her expression a mask of clinical detachment. She reached out and pressed the automated pool cover switch on the sleek wall panel. With a low, mechanical whine, the heavy motorized vinyl blanket began to unroll across the surface of the water, sealing off the light and trapping Clara in a watery tomb. Victoria turned her back, walking away with the steady click of stiletto heels against the tile, believing her dark deed was finished once and for all.

Farther down the hall, the heavy oak doors burst open. Liam heard the muffled shriek and the distinctive splash from the courtyard corridor. Heart hammering against his ribs, he sprinted around the corner just in time to see the heavy pool cover sliding over the water. His eyes widened in absolute horror as he spotted Clara's sinking form through the translucent blue depths. "No! Stop!" Liam roared, his voice cracking with sheer desperation. Without a second thought, he launched himself off the edge, plunging headfirst into the pool to save the woman he loved.
