Chapter 14 - The Empty Loft

The elevator doors slid open with a soft, metallic chime, revealing the sprawling, open-plan interior of Clara's loft. The apartment was dark, illuminated only by the flashing red LED lights of a digital timer strapped to a propane tank near the kitchen counter. The countdown read 02:45 and dropping fast.
"Get back in the elevator! Now!" Liam yelled, shoving Clara behind a concrete pillar while he sprinted toward the device. He yanked his multi-tool from his pocket, his fingers moving with frantic precision as he inspected the wiring.
"It's a dummy trigger linked to a remote radio frequency receiver," Liam muttered under his breath, sweat dripping down his forehead. "There's no explosive filler inside the tank—it's psychological warfare. They wanted us to panic and run right into their hands."
Suddenly, a heavy steel security shutter slammed down over the elevator entrance, sealing them inside the loft with a resounding crash. From the darkness of the mezzanine balcony above, a slow, mocking applause echoed through the empty room.
"Bravo, Liam. I always knew you were resourceful, but stepping right into the lion's den? That's just pathetic," a smooth, arrogant voice rang out from the shadows.
Chapter 15 The Ghost from the Past
A figure stepped down from the spiral staircase into the dim light of the loft. He wore an expensive charcoal tailored suit, silver hair combed back neatly, and a cold, predatory smile playing across his lips. It was Julian Cross—the man presumed dead for half a decade.
Clara stepped out from behind the concrete pillar, her eyes blazing with fury. "Julian... you bastard. You lied to everyone. You destroyed my father's legacy.
Julian chuckled softly, swirling a glass of scotch he had apparently poured himself from Clara's liquor cabinet. "Dead men tell no tales, Clara, but they make an incredible amount of money. Your father built this company on stolen patents, and I merely took back what was rightfully mine. Victoria was just a convenient instrument to finish the job.
"You won't get away with this, Julian. The police already have Victoria's confessions and the financial wire logs," Liam said, slowly shifting his weight to position himself between Julian and Clara.
Julian's smile vanished, replaced by a dark, dangerous glare. He pulled a compact military-grade detonator from his jacket pocket, his thumb resting casually over the activation toggle. "The police are currently dealing with a coordinated diversion across the city. By the time they realize this loft is my private fortress, you, your unborn child, and this entire building will be nothing more than ash and rubble."
Clara's hand dropped instinctively to her swollen belly, her heart pounding with terror, but her voice remained ice-cold. "You think you've won, Julian? Look behind you."

Julian laughed dismissively. "Nice try, Clara, I'm not falling for—"
Before he could finish his sentence, the reinforced glass skylight above the mezzanine shattered into a million sparkling fragments.
