Chapter 3 - Shattered Glass

Darkness closed in around them like a physical weight. Clara's chest heaved as her body demanded oxygen, her vision blurring at the edges into shimmering black spots. Liam refused to yield to despair. He pressed Clara upward against the underside of the pool cover, using his broad shoulders as leverage, but the reinforced vinyl was built to withstand heavy weight, refusing to tear.

With lungs burning and his vision greying out, Liam realized the surface cover was impenetrable from below. He needed another way out. Remembering the architectural blueprints of the Sterling estate he had reviewed during the renovation contracts, he recalled the deep underwater return vents and the reinforced structural glass panels lining the deep-end viewing wall that connected to the subterranean mechanical room.

"Hold onto me! Do not let go!" Liam signaled frantically in the dark, gripping Clara by the shoulders. She nodded weakly, wrapping her arms around his neck with the last ounce of her strength.

Diving down into the black abyss beneath the pool cover, Liam scanned the tiled wall for the reinforced glass viewing port. The water pressure roared in his ears, and his heart pounded like a trapped bird against his ribs. There it was—a thick square of tempered glass separating the pool from the dry utility basement. If he could break it, the water pressure would drain them into the lower chamber, giving them a fighting chance at survival. With a desperate prayer, Liam curled his body into a tight coil, aimed his heavy boots at the center of the glass, and unleashed every remaining ounce of his explosive strength in a brutal, bone-jarring kick.

Chapter 4 The Subterranean Deluge

The first kick produced a dull, heavy thud that reverberated through the water and sent shockwaves up Liam's shins. The glass didn't even crack. Clara floated behind him, her face deathly pale, bubbles escaping her lips in a slow, tragic stream. She was slipping away into unconsciousness. Panic threatened to paralyze Liam, but love and rage fueled a ferocious second wind.

Drawing on every reserve of physical power he possessed, Liam spun around, grabbed the metal pool ladder rail for leverage, and drove both heels forward into the glass with a furious, coordinated thrust. A spiderweb of fractures instantly splintered across the panel. With a final, roaring push, the glass shattered inward.

A torrential vortex of water erupted through the breach, sucking Liam and Clara violently into the dark, echoing utility basement below. They tumbled through the jagged opening like leaves in a hurricane, landing hard on the concrete floor amidst a chaotic rush of freezing water and broken glass shards. Liam instantly dragged Clara away from the rushing torrent, cradling her head as she coughed violently, expelling water and gasping for precious, life-saving air.

"I've got you. You're safe, I've got you," Liam choked out, pressing his forehead against hers as they lay shivering on the wet concrete. But as the adrenaline began to subside, the grim reality of their situation set in: the basement doors were heavy steel, locked from the outside, and Victoria believed they were already dead at the bottom of the pool.

Chapter 5 Shadows in the Mansion

Upstairs in the grand foyer of the Sterling Estate, Victoria poured herself a glass of vintage amber whiskey, her hands steady despite the attempted murder she had just orchestrated. She walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the rear gardens, savoring the quiet victory. With Clara and her unborn heir out of the picture, the multi-billion-dollar Sterling family trust would legally revert entirely to Victoria's husband—her puppet, Richard Sterling.

Her celebratory moment was interrupted by the chime of the front security gate intercom. Victoria frowned, smoothing down her violet pantsuit before pressing the console button. "State your business," she commanded coldly.

"Mrs. Vance, this is Detective Marcus Vance—no relation, just business from the municipal precinct," a deep, gravelly voice echoed through the speaker. "We received an anonymous tip regarding suspicious financial transfers originating from this estate linked to offshore accounts. I need to speak with Mr. Sterling immediately."

Victoria's heart skipped a beat, but her expression hardened into a mask of polite ice. "My husband is currently unavailable, Detective. He is resting in his study. Perhaps you can discuss your inquiries with me or return with a formal warrant."

"I think I'd rather come in and take a look around, Mrs. Vance," Marcus replied smoothly, the sound of heavy boots echoing as the security gates buzzed open automatically—unbeknownst to Victoria, a smart-home glitch triggered by Richard's tablet in the study. Victoria slammed her fist against the console, her mind racing. If the police searched the estate now, they might uncover the security footage from the pool natatorium before she had time to wipe the server logs.
