Chapter 1 - Shattered Glass and Broken Lies

The crystal chandeliers of the Ashworth Grand Hotel flickered against the marble floors, casting long, elegant shadows over high society's finest. But the aristocratic music ground to a sudden halt when the sound of shattering glass reverberated through the grand lobby.

Della Marsh stumbled backward, her uniform soaked in red wine. She slammed into the massive gilded mirror mounted against the wall. Spiderweb cracks exploded across the heavy glass behind her, raining sharp silver fragments onto the polished floor.

Her hands flew out by instinct. One pressed against the cold, cracked surface to balance herself, while the other tightly cradled the gentle, vulnerable curve of her five-month pregnant belly.

"My baby..." Della gasped, her voice trembling as she doubled over in sheer terror. "Please... my baby..."

Behind her stood Cordelia Vance, dressed in a crimson silk gown that clung to her figure like blood. Diamonds sparkled at her throat, but her eyes burned with pure malice. Raised in the lap of obscene wealth, Cordelia had spent her entire life believing that money rendered her immune to consequences.

"This is what happens when lower-class servants forget their place," Cordelia hissed loudly, ensuring every wealthy onlooker heard her.

Della’s knees shook uncontrollably. A jagged shard of glass had sliced deep into the back of her hand, and crimson blood trickled over an old crescent-shaped scar near her knuckles. She didn't feel the sharp stinging pain in her hand; every fiber of her being was consumed by the terrifying fear for her unborn child.

"I didn't do anything..." Della whispered, her tear-stained eyes scanning the crowd of onlookers. But in a room populated by billionaires and socialites, the quiet plea of a pregnant waitress carried no weight.

"You spilled wine on my vintage dress!" Cordelia barked, stepping closer.

"The tray was bumped by your associate!" Della pleaded, trying to breathe through the sharp pain cramping in her stomach. "Please... I just need to sit down..."

Cordelia laughed mockingly. "Now you want sympathy? You worthless little pest." She reached out and grabbed Della by the collar of her uniform, pulling her violently.

"Let her go."

The command was not raised, yet it silenced the entire grand hall instantly.

From the shadows near the marble columns stepped Royce Calloway. He wore a tailored charcoal suit, his presence imposing and deadly calm. Along the left side of his neck, the dark edge of a ink tattoo peeked out beneath his collar—a mark known well to both high-society elites and the criminal underworld. As the secret owner of the Ashworth Grand and head of the Calloway Syndicate, Royce was a man whose name was whispered with quiet terror.

Cordelia turned, sneering. "Who do you think you are to interrupt me?"

Royce stepped forward. In one effortless motion, his hand clamped around Cordelia’s wrist with a grip of pure iron. Cordelia gasped in pain, immediately loosening her grip on Della.

Before Della could collapse to the floor, Royce caught her securely by the shoulders. His touch was unexpectedly gentle, holding her as if she were made of delicate porcelain rather than rags.

"Sit," Royce murmured softly to Della, guiding her gently into a plush velvet armchair nearby. "Slowly. Do not stand."

"Is... is my baby okay?" Della sobbed, clutching her abdomen.

Royce turned his cold, piercing eyes toward the hotel staff. "Call an emergency medical team immediately. Clear this lobby, and lock down all security camera footage. If a single frame is deleted, someone will answer to me."

The hotel manager, Mrs. Petrova, paled dramatically. "Yes, Mr. Calloway! Right away!"

At that moment, Harlan Vance rushed through the revolving glass doors, phone in hand. "Cordelia! What is going on here?" But when Harlan saw Royce standing over the scene, the color drained entirely from his face.

Harlan had spent months begging Royce’s investment firm for a fifty-million-dollar bailout to save his failing enterprise. His family’s entire empire hinged on Royce’s approval.

"Mr. Calloway..." Harlan stammered, sweating profusely. "I... I apologize. My fiancée Cordelia has a temper, but this is just a minor workplace dispute. We can settle this privately. About our contract—"

Royce knelt beside Della, taking her injured hand to inspect the blood. His eyes locked onto the back of her hand—specifically, the faint, crescent-shaped scar beneath the fresh blood.

A memory hit Royce like a sledgehammer. Five years ago. A rainy alleyway. He had been shot, bleeding out, hunted by mercenary assassins. A young, impoverished girl had opened a hidden door, dragged him into safety, and bandaged his wounds in the dark. When glass broke during the ambush, she had taken a blade fragment to the hand without making a sound. By morning, she had vanished without a trace, leaving behind only the memory of her courage.

Royce’s breath hitched. He looked into Della’s pale, gentle face.

"What is your name?" Royce asked, his deep voice carrying a rare, raw emotion.

"Della..." she whispered, shivering. "Della Marsh."

She didn't recognize him. To her, he was just a powerful stranger offering unexpected kindness. But Royce knew. The woman he had searched for across the country for five agonizing years was sitting right in front of him—pregnant, terrified, and abused by the very people seeking his money.

Royce stood up slowly and turned to face Harlan and Cordelia Vance.

"Our business contract," Royce said softly, his voice dropping to a temperature that froze the room, "is permanently terminated."

Harlan choked on his own breath. "What?! Mr. Calloway, please! My family will be ruined!"

Royce looked directly into Cordelia’s terrified eyes. "Then you should have taught your fiancée not to lay a hand on the woman who owns my life."
