Chapter 5 - A Serpent in Silk

Life at the Calloway estate was unlike anything Della Marsh had ever experienced. For the past two weeks, she had lived in absolute luxury. She had her own private suite overlooking the pristine rose gardens, a team of personal chefs preparing nutritious meals for her pregnancy, and the finest doctors visiting every three days to monitor her baby's growth.

Yet, despite the opulence, Della remained humble. She spent her afternoons reading in the massive estate library or helping Mrs. Higgins arrange flowers in the grand foyer, refusing to be treated like a helpless porcelain doll.

Royce, normally known throughout the city as an unyielding and terrifying mafia kingpin, transformed whenever he was around her. He adjusted his heavy work schedule, making sure to return to the estate every evening by six o'clock to join Della for dinner.

"You don't have to come home so early every day," Della said softy one evening as they sat in the candlelit dining room. "I know you run a massive business empire, Royce."

Royce cut a piece of tender steak on his plate, smiling faintly. "My businesses survived ten years without me having dinner at six. They will survive now. Besides, I prefer eating here."

Della blushed slightly, cutting her vegetables. "The doctor said today that the baby is very healthy. He said... it's likely a girl."

Royce stopped his knife and fork mid-air. He looked up at her, his dark eyes softening with a rare, radiant warmth. "A girl?"

"Yes," Della smiled, placing her hand gently over her stomach. "She's kicking a lot today. Do you... do you want to feel?"

Royce stared at her, stunned. For a man who dealt in multi-million dollar deals and underground territory wars, this simple offer made his heart race faster than any danger ever had. He stood up slowly, walked around the long mahogany table, and knelt beside her chair.

Cautiously, as if touching fragile glass, Royce placed his large, warm palm against Della’s abdomen.

A second later, a firm, distinct kick tapped against his hand.

Royce gasped softly, a breathtaking, genuine smile breaking across his handsome face. "I felt it... she's strong."

Della laughed softly, looking down at his dark hair and broad shoulders. In that moment, surrounded by warm light, the shadowy underworld boss looked like nothing more than a protective, loving man. The pull between them was undeniable, an invisible thread weaving their hearts together.

However, the peaceful atmosphere was shattered moments later when Marcus walked briskly into the dining room, his expression grave.

"Boss," Marcus said quietly. "We have a intruder at the gate. Or rather... a guest."

Royce’s warm smile instantly vanished, replaced by his usual stoic mask. He stood up, wiping his hands with a napkin. "Who is it?"

"It's Evelyn Vance," Marcus replied. "Cordelia's mother. She came alone in a taxi, begging to see Miss Della."

Della gasped softly. "Cordelia's mother?"

Royce’s eyes narrowed. "Send her away, Marcus. The Vances are banned from my presence."

"Wait, Royce, please," Della spoke up, rising from her chair. "Let me speak to her. If she came alone without security, maybe she just wants to apologize or give information about where Cordelia is."

Royce looked at Della, worrying for her stress levels, but seeing the determination in her soft eyes, he nodded. "Very well. But Marcus and I will be standing right outside the room."

Five minutes later, Evelyn Vance was ushered into the estate’s secondary parlor. She was a middle-aged woman dressed in expensive designer silk, but her face was pale, lined with exhaustion and anxiety. When Della entered the room, Evelyn immediately fell to her knees, crying hysterically.

"Miss Marsh! Please, I beg you!" Evelyn sobbed, clutching Della’s hem. "Have mercy on my family! My husband Harlan has been ruined, his assets frozen! And my daughter Cordelia is facing ten years in prison!"

Della stepped back, startled. "Mrs. Vance, please stand up."

"I won't get up until you promise to drop the charges!" Evelyn wept, her voice trembling with synthetic agony. "Cordelia is just a foolish child! She made a terrible mistake! But Mr. Calloway is destroying us! He bought out all our bank debts and is foreclosing on our family home tomorrow morning! We will be on the street!"

Della felt a pang of conflict in her gentle heart. She hated seeing anyone suffer, even those who had mistreated her. "Mrs. Vance, what your daughter did was dangerous. She could have killed my baby."

"I know, I know!" Evelyn cried, reaching into her designer handbag as if pulling out a handkerchief. "She is deeply sorry! Look, she wrote you a letter of confession and apology!"

Evelyn thrust a folded piece of parchment toward Della.

Instinctively, Della reached out to take the letter. But as the parchment unfolded, a subtle, sweet, chemical scent burst into the air.

Della’s head immediately spun. A wave of intense dizziness washed over her, and her vision blurred instantly. The paper had been soaked in a potent odorless nerve toxin.

"What... what is this..." Della gasped, stumbling backward as her legs gave out.

Evelyn’s tearful, begging expression instantly melted away, replaced by a cold, wicked sneer.

May you like

"You thought you could ruin the Vance family and live happily ever after with Royce Calloway?" Evelyn whispered venomously, standing up smoothly. "Victor Falcone sends his regards, you little maid."

As Della collapsed toward the hardwood floor, dark shadows rushed into the parlor from the garden terrace windows!
