Chapter 2 - The Price of a Scar

The siren of the ambulance echoed outside the Ashworth Grand Hotel as medical paramedics rushed through the marble lobby with a gurney. Della Marsh was carefully lifted onto the bed, her hands still trembling over her stomach. Royce stood beside her, his tall frame blocking out the intrusive stares of the upper-class crowd.
"Accompany her to St. Jude’s Private Hospital," Royce commanded his personal chief security guard, Marcus. "Set up a full perimeter on her floor. Nobody enters or leaves her room without my explicit permission. Ensure the top obstetrician in the city is waiting for her."
"Understood, Boss," Marcus replied, nodding firmly before following the paramedics out the heavy glass doors.
In the lobby, silence hung heavy like a executioner's blade. Harlan Vance stood frozen, his eyes wide with absolute horror, while Cordelia gripped his arm in panic.
"Harlan, do something!" Cordelia demanded, her voice shrill with anger and embarrassment. "Who does this man think he is? He can't just break a financial contract over a pathetic waitress!"
"Shut up, Cordelia!" Harlan roared, shaking her off violently. "Do you have any idea who that is?! That is Royce Calloway! He doesn't just own hotels—he owns the banks, the docks, and half the politicians in this state! You just destroyed our entire family business in five seconds!"
Cordelia went pale, stepping back toward the broken mirror. "I... I didn't know..."
Royce turned back to face the pair. His expression was devoid of anger; it was cold, calculating, and ruthless. He stepped closer, his polished black shoes crunching over the shards of broken mirror on the floor.
"Mr. Calloway, please," Harlan begged, dropping to his knees without shame in front of his wealthy peers. "My daughter—she made a mistake! We will pay for the waitress's medical bills! We will pay her a million dollars! Just please, don't pull out of the Vance Logistics deal. We will go bankrupt by the end of the week!"
"A million dollars?" Royce said, his voice laced with venomous disdain. "You think you can buy forgiveness for harming her? Five years ago, that woman gave me something money could never purchase: my life."
Cordelia’s eyes widened in confusion. "What are you talking about? She's just a dirty maid!"
Royce looked at Cordelia with pure disgust. "Mrs. Petrova," he called out to the trembling hotel manager.
"Yes, Mr. Calloway?"
"Cordelia Vance is barred from every Calloway property worldwide. If she sets foot in any establishment I own, have her arrested for trespassing and assault. Furthermore, call the city police chief directly. Hand over the unedited camera footage of her shoving a pregnant woman into glass. I want felony assault charges filed before midnight."
"Right away, sir!" Mrs. Petrova hurried toward the management office.
Cordelia gasped, her face twisting in outrage. "You can't do this! My grandfather was a senator!"
"Your grandfather is dead, Cordelia," Royce replied calmly, pulling a white handkerchief from his pocket to wipe a drop of blood from his cuff. "And soon, your family’s legacy will follow him."
With those final words, Royce turned on his heel and walked toward the exit, his heavy overcoat billowing behind him.
Ten minutes later, Royce’s black armored sedan pulled up outside St. Jude’s Hospital. He took the private elevator straight to the penthouse medical suite. Standing outside Room 702 were four armed guards in dark suits.
Marcus stepped forward. "The doctor just finished the examination, Boss. The baby is safe. Her heart rate has stabilized, though the mother suffered mild contractions due to severe stress. She also required eight stitches on her hand."
Royce let out a long, silent breath he hadn't realized he was holding. "And Della? How is she?"
"She's conscious, sir. But she's terrified. She thinks she's going to be fired and sued by the Vance family."
Royce pushed open the heavy wooden door of the suite. The room was spacious and luxurious, filled with fresh flowers and warm ambient light. Della sat propped up on the medical bed, a white bandage wrapped tightly around her left hand, looking small and fragile in the large hospital room.
When she saw Royce enter, she instinctively pulled the bedsheets higher. "Mr. Calloway..." she whispered softly. "I... I am so sorry for the mess in the lobby. I will pay for the broken mirror, I swear. Just please don't report me to the agency..."
Royce walked slowly to the side of her bed and sat down in the leather armchair beside her. "Della," he said, his voice softer than anyone in the underground had ever heard it. "You don't owe anyone an apology. You did nothing wrong."
"You don't understand," Della sobbed, tears rolling down her cheeks. "People like the Vances... they always win. I have no money, no family, and now I don't have a job. How am I going to take care of my baby?"
Royce reached out, his long fingers hesitating before gently resting over her bandaged hand. "You will never have to worry about money, safety, or work ever again."
Della looked at him, confused. "Why are you doing this for me? You don't even know me."
Royce looked into her soft brown eyes, his thumb gently tracing the edge of her bandage. "Look closely at me, Della. Five years ago... a cold November night in the alley behind 4th Street. Rain was pouring. You heard a man bleeding against your apartment door."
Della froze. Her breath hitched as she stared into Royce’s sharp features, the high cheekbones, and the dark tattoo running down his neck. The memory, long buried under years of struggle, suddenly resurfaced with crystal clarity.

"The man in the black coat..." Della whispered, her eyes widening in realization. "The one who was hurt..."
"It was me," Royce said quietly. "I told you I would return for you. It took me five years to find you, Della. And I am never letting anyone hurt you again."
