Chapter 9 - The Trap is Set

Inside the bleak visitor room of the federal detention facility, Cordelia Vance gripped the plastic telephone receiver tightly against her ear. Her manicured nails were chipped, her hair unwashed, and her eyes hollow with desperation.

On the other side of the thick bulletproof glass sat Julian Calloway. Julian was thirty-five years old, slick, impeccably dressed in an Italian suit, with cold eyes that mirrored Royce’s sharp features, but lacked any trace of honor or discipline. As Royce’s cousin, Julian had spent his entire life living in Royce’s massive shadow, bitter and desperate to claim control of the multi-billion dollar Calloway Syndicate.

"You said you could get me out of here," Cordelia hissed into the phone, her voice desperate. "My lawyers said the federal prosecutor is pushing for fifteen years without parole! You have to help me!"

Julian smiled thinly, adjusting his silk tie. "Calm down, Cordelia. You and your father were stupid. You let Victor Falcone lead you into a trap. But your stupidity created an unexpected opportunity for me."

Cordelia scowled. "What opportunity?"

"Royce has always been impenetrable," Julian whispered, leaning closer to the glass. "He has no vices. He doesn't gamble, he doesn't drink to excess, and he trusts no one. For ten years, I've been looking for a crack in his armor to take control of the family board. And now... he has brought a pregnant, helpless waitress into his fortress."

Cordelia’s eyes flashed with pure hatred at the mention of Della. "That disgusting little maid... Royce treats her like a queen! He threw my family in prison for her!"

"Exactly," Julian chuckled darkly. "Royce’s entire security network is focused on protecting her and her unborn brat. He is soft now. Blinded by emotion. And when a king becomes soft, his crown is easily stolen."

"What do you want me to do?" Cordelia demanded.

"Your father still holds thirty percent of the votes in Vance Logistics," Julian explained smoothly. "I need you to convince Harlan to sign over those corporate voting rights to me. In exchange, I will use my underground contacts to bribe the federal judge, pull strings with the prosecutor, and have your charges reduced to probation."

Cordelia gasped, hope flaring in her eyes. "You can really do that?"

"I have politicians in my pocket that even Royce doesn't know about," Julian lied effortlessly. "Sign the paper, Cordelia, and I will not only free you—I will make sure that waitress loses everything, including her life."

Without hesitation, Cordelia slammed her hand against the glass. "Done! I'll make my father sign whatever you want!"

Two hours later, Julian walked out of the federal facility with signed transfer documents in his leather briefcase. He stepped into the backseat of a black sedan waiting in the alleyway.

Sitting in the front passenger seat was Liam—Della’s cowardly ex-fiancé who had abandoned her months ago after stealing her savings!

"Did she sign it, Mr. Calloway?" Liam asked nervously, sweating in his cheap suit.

"Of course she did," Julian scoffed, tossing the briefcase onto the seat beside him. "Desperate people believe anything." He looked at Liam with cold disdain. "Are you sure the girl is five months pregnant with your child?"

Liam nodded frantically. "Yes! I swear! Della was five weeks pregnant when I left her four months ago! That child in her belly is mine!"

Julian’s lips twisted into a dark, sinister grin. "Perfect. A biological father coming forward to claim his stolen child, alleging that the notorious mafia boss Royce Calloway kidnapped his pregnant girlfriend and forced her into hiding..."

"Will... will I get the money you promised me, sir?" Liam asked greedily.

"You'll get a million dollars," Julian promised, tapping his fingers on his knee. "All you have to do is go live on national television tomorrow morning, play the victim, and file a emergency custody petition against Royce Calloway. Once the public scandal hits, the Calloway Syndicate board of directors will vote Royce out as CEO, and I will take his throne."

Liam grinned, his eyes filled with pathetic greed. "Consider it done, Mr. Calloway."

Meanwhile, back at the Calloway estate, the evening was quiet and warm. Royce and Della were sitting in the estate nursery, which was currently being renovated and painted in soft pastel colors.

Royce was holding a wooden crib assembly manual, looking unusually confused by the simple instructions.

Della laughed lightheartedly, sitting on a rocking chair. "The mighty Royce Calloway, master of the city's underground, defeated by a baby crib?"

Royce chuckled, tossing the manual onto the floor. "I can dismantle an assault rifle in four seconds, but these wooden screws make no sense."

Della shook her head fondly, walking over to stand beside him. "Let me help you."

As they leaned down together to position the crib frame, their faces ended up inches apart. Royce looked into her eyes, his hand reaching out to gently cup her cheek.

"I talked to my legal team today," Royce said softly. "I'm setting up a trust fund for the baby. Fifty million dollars in secure real estate and stocks, fully in your name."

Della stared at him, stunned. "Royce... no... that's too much—"

"It's not enough," Royce interrupted gently. "You and this baby are my family now, Della."

May you like

Della felt her heart melt completely. She leaned in and pressed her forehead against his, feeling completely safe.

Neither of them knew that outside the gates, the storm of Julian’s ultimate betrayal was already brewing.
