Chapter 15 - The Trap is Sprung

Back in Manhattan, Claire Bennett and Rachel Monroe were putting the finishing touches on the corporate restructuring strategy designed to absorb Apex Systems’ distressed assets at pennies on the dollar.
'The acquisition path is entirely clear,' Rachel noted, sliding the final merger agreement across the desk for Claire’s signature. 'With Apex crippled by federal indictments and civil liability suits from their own shareholders, we can acquire their core infrastructure and client roster through emergency bankruptcy court proceedings next week.'
Claire picked up a sleek fountain pen, signing her name with crisp, fluid precision. 'Make sure our compliance audit verifies every single line of acquired code. I don't want a single trace of compromised architecture anywhere near our systems.'
'Done,' Rachel said, gathering the paperwork. 'And as for Ethan and Marcus? Their preliminary hearings are set for Friday morning. The prosecution’s case is airtight. There won't even be a trial; it will be an immediate plea bargain or a swift, merciless bench conviction.'
Claire stood up, walking toward the window to watch the afternoon sun glinting off the Chrysler Building spire. 'People like Ethan spend their entire lives believing that charm and borrowed luxury are substitutes for actual substance. They forget that eventually, the bill arrives, and reality always collects in full.'
'Speaking of reality,' Rachel added with a knowing smile at the door. 'You received a small delivery at the front desk about an hour ago. Security scanned it twice—it's completely safe.'

Claire raised an eyebrow. 'What is it?'
'A letter,' Rachel said, turning to leave. 'From Vanessa. She’s leaving New York, heading back out west to start over under her maiden name. Thought you might want to read it.'
