Chapter 8 - The Corporate Web Unravels

Local county sheriff deputies moved in with practiced efficiency, their heavy boots crunching softly on the gravel driveway as they closed the distance between themselves and Ethan Cole.

'Ethan Cole,' the senior officer stated clearly, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt, 'you are being detained for questioning in connection with grand larceny, unauthorized computer access, and wire fraud.'

'Wait, this is civil! This is a civil dispute between partners!' Ethan shouted, thrashing his arms away as the deputies grabbed his wrists and forced them behind his back. The custom Brioni tuxedo bunched awkwardly around his shoulders as the metal cuffs clicked securely into place.

'We know exactly who you are, Mr. Cole,' Rachel Monroe replied dryly, handing a duplicate copy of the warrant to the estate manager. 'And by the afternoon news cycle, so will every financial institution in the tri-state area.'

As Ethan was hauled away toward the parking lot in handcuffs—his head ducked low, desperately trying to shield his face from the flashing cameras of several enterprising wedding guests—the reality of the disaster settled over the courtyard like a dense fog.

Vanessa stood near the shattered remains of the champagne tower, weeping mascara tears down her powdered cheeks, completely abandoned by the social network she had spent years trying to infiltrate. The wedding planners were hurriedly dismantling the floral arches, carting away expensive Dutch orchids as collateral against unpaid labor.

Claire turned her gaze toward the estate manager, who hurried over, looking apologetic and flustered. 'Ms. Bennett, I cannot express how deeply humiliated we are. If we had known—'

'You couldn't have known, Director,' Claire interrupted politely. 'Mr. Cole is exceptionally talented at fabricating credentials. However, Bennett Event Systems is prepared to cover the immediate administrative inconvenience for the venue staff today, provided you release all security footage and vendor contracts to my legal team within the hour.'

'Consider it done, Ms. Bennett,' the manager stammered gratefully.

Rachel stepped up beside Claire, tapping her tablet screen. 'The local precinct has him booked for processing. Bail hearing is scheduled for Monday morning. Given the federal wire fraud implications and the digital evidence Priya pulled from your office servers, the district attorney is going to push for a high-security remand without bail.'
