Standing on the private balcony of her Manhattan penthouse months later, Claire looked out over the sparkling expanse of the city skyline as twilight began to paint the sky in shades of deep indigo and gold.
The company was thriving more than ever, expanding its international footprint into European markets with new security protocols and unassailable digital infrastructure. Her personal life was peaceful, anchored by loyal colleagues, genuine friends, and an unshakeable confidence in her own judgment.
She turned away from the railing and walked back inside, where her laptop sat open on the sleek marble dining table. A notification pinged softly from her secure corporate email server—an encrypted message from an unknown international IP address routing through a secure proxy server in Zurich.
She clicked open the message. The text was brief, cryptic, and chillingly familiar in its ambition:
'The game in New York was just the beta test, Claire. The global board is much larger than you think. We’ll be seeing you soon.'
Claire stared at the glowing screen for a long, silent moment. A slow, razor-sharp smile touched the corners of her lips. She didn't feel fear. She felt the exhilarating thrum of a brand-new challenge waking up in her veins.
