Chapter 7 - Face to Face in the Ruins

The silence in the courtyard was absolute. You could hear the gentle ripple of the Hudson River down the slope and the distant rustle of wind through the willow trees. Three hundred society elites stood frozen, champagne flutes still clutched in their hands, staring in rapt, horrified fascination at the unfolding drama.
Ethan stared at Claire as if she were an apparition rising from the dead. His lips parted, but no sound came out—only a ragged, shallow gasp of air.
Claire walked slowly across the flagstone patio, her heels clicking rhythmically against the stone. She stopped five feet away from Ethan, her dark eyes scanning him up and down with clinical detachment.
'Claire,' Ethan finally managed to whisper, his voice trembling violently. 'Please... we can talk about this. Don't do this here. Not in front of everyone.'
'Why not, Ethan?' Claire asked, her tone conversational, almost breezy, cutting through the heavy air like a razor. 'You always loved an audience. You spent months parading yourself around Manhattan as a visionary tech titan, using my success as your personal stepping stone. It only seems fitting that your audience gets to see the final act.'
Vanessa stepped forward, her eyes blazing with sudden, furious betrayal. She looked at Ethan, then at Claire, her voice shaking with rage. 'You lied to me. Every single cent of this... the catering, the band, the estate... it was stolen from her?'
'Vanessa, I can explain—' Ethan lunged forward, trying to grab her arm.

'Don't touch me!' Vanessa shrieked, recoiling as if he carried a plague. She ripped the diamond necklace from her throat—the one charged to Claire’s black card—and hurled it directly into Ethan’s chest. It clattered uselessly against his lapel before dropping onto the stone. 'You absolute fraud! You used me to launder your pathetic social climbing!'
'Ms. Vance is entirely correct,' Rachel Monroe added smoothly, stepping up beside Claire. 'Furthermore, every vendor who provided services under these fraudulent corporate contracts has been notified that payment has been legally revoked. You are personally liable for every single invoice, Mr. Cole.'
