Chapter 4 - The Countdown Begins

By 4:30 Friday afternoon, the panic had begun to seep through the polished veneer of Ethan Cole’s manufactured reality.

Claire was reviewing code updates on her laptop when her personal cell phone vibrated violently against the mahogany desk. The caller ID displayed a name she had blocked across all primary communication channels, but her private assistant line routed it directly to her desktop interface.

Ethan Cole.

She let it ring through three full cycles, listening to the monotonous digital pulse before she finally pressed the speakerphone icon.

'Claire,' Ethan’s voice burst through the speaker, tightly controlled but vibrating with an unmistakable edge of panic. 'We need to talk. Right now.'

Claire remained silent for three seconds, letting the dead air stretch out like a physical barrier between them. 'I am exceedingly busy, Ethan. If this is about your social calendar, you dialed the wrong number.'

'Stop playing games,' he snapped, his composure fraying at the edges. 'There’s an issue with the bank. My cards are declining. The caterer is holding my coordinator hostage over a wire transfer, and the estate manager is threatening to lock the gates unless I provide an alternative funding source within the hour. Fix it.'

Claire took a slow sip of her sparkling water, letting the carbonation fizz softly before she spoke. 'Fix what, Ethan? You're a brilliant tech investor with a vast fortune built alongside visionary partners. Surely a man of your immense financial caliber doesn't need my assistance to pay for his own wedding.'

A sharp intake of breath hissed through the speaker. For a second, there was absolute silence on the line.

'How... what are you talking about?' Ethan stammered, the practiced charm vanishing completely, replaced by the raw, jagged panic of a cornered animal.

'I’m talking about $347,860 worth of unauthorized charges,' Claire said, her voice dropping into an arctic chill. 'I’m talking about forged corporate sponsorship agreements bearing my digital signature. I’m talking about grand larceny, wire fraud, and unauthorized computer access.'

'Claire, listen to me,' Ethan pleaded, his voice cracking slightly as he realized the magnitude of the abyss opening beneath him. 'It was just a temporary arrangement! We can settle this privately. We don't need lawyers, we don't need the police. Let's just talk like adults.'

'I think,' Claire said, her eyes fixed on the legal document glowing on her secondary monitor, 'tomorrow is exactly when everything gets fixed.'

She tapped the screen and disconnected the call, cutting off his frantic pleading mid-sentence.
