Chapter 10 - Confronting the Past

Two days after the terrifying respiratory crisis, Caleb’s condition finally reached a true, unwavering stability. The medical team successfully removed the breathing tube for good, and Caleb began breathing entirely on his own without any mechanical assistance.

However, while Caleb was making miraculous physical progress, Luke was forced to confront the financial storm that was rapidly heading straight for his family.

Vance Sterling had officially fired Luke from Sterling Construction, sending a formal termination letter citing 'abandonment of duties and professional negligence.' Furthermore, Vance had carried out his cruel threat: he had instructed the corporate human resources department to retroactively cancel the Bennett family's health insurance coverage as of the first of the month.

Luke sat in the hospital cafeteria, staring at a stack of preliminary hospital invoices sitting on the table. The current total was staggering: two hundred and forty thousand dollars—and counting.

"Luke?"

Luke quickly looked up to see a familiar face standing near his table. It was David Vance, a senior senior partner at one of Seattle's most prestigious corporate law firms—and, coincidentally, an old college roommate of Luke's from his engineering days at the University of Washington.

"David?" Luke said, thoroughly shocked, standing up to shake his old friend's hand. "What are you doing here?"

"My daughter had her tonsils out this morning," David said, pulling out a chair and sitting down. He noticed the mountain of terrifying medical bills spread across the table and the exhaustion etched deep into Luke's face. "Luke... my God, man. What's going on? Is everything okay?"

Luke hesitated for a moment, but the heavy burden he was carrying was too much for one man to bear alone. He poured out the entire story: Caleb’s miraculous birth, his fight for life in the NICU, Vance Sterling’s illegal demands to sign off on unsafe building blueprints, and the corporate retaliatory firing that stripped his family of medical insurance.

David listened in absolute silence, his sharp legal mind processing every single word. His face grew increasingly dark as Luke described Vance's actions.

"Let me get this straight," David said smoothly, leaning forward over the table. "Vance Sterling ordered you to falsify safety compliance records on a twenty-story commercial building, threatened your family's health insurance when you refused, and then canceled your medical benefits while your newborn child was in intensive care?"

"Yes," Luke said, pulling the black USB drive out of his pocket and setting it on the table. "And I have every email, altered blueprint, and recorded phone call stored right here on this drive."

David picked up the USB drive, a cold, calculated smile spreading across his face. "Luke, as your friend, I am deeply sorry you had to go through this hell. But as a senior litigation lawyer... this is the most slam-dunk case of corporate whistle-blower retaliation and gross criminal negligence I have seen in twenty years."

David slid the USB drive into his suit jacket pocket. "I am taking this file directly to the King County District Attorney and the State Building Inspection Board today. By tomorrow morning, Sterling Construction will be under federal investigation, and Vance Sterling will be facing criminal fraud charges."

Luke stared at his friend in complete disbelief. "What about the medical bills? The insurance?"

David placed a comforting hand on Luke’s shoulder. "Under federal law, retaliatory cancellation of health insurance during documented emergency medical leave is entirely illegal. I will file an emergency injunction before noon. Your insurance will be fully reinstated retroactively by five o'clock today, and Sterling Construction will be paying every single cent of your legal fees and hospital bills."

For the first time in weeks, Luke felt a massive weight lift entirely off his crushing chest. He buried his face in his hands and breathed out a long, shuddering sigh of pure relief.
