Chapter 7 - The Saboteur

The following morning, Luke arrived at the Bellevue construction site at seven-thirty. The massive concrete structure towered twenty stories into the Seattle skyline, surrounded by heavy machinery and swarming with construction workers.

Vance Sterling was waiting in the site trailer, wearing an expensive tailored suit beneath a yellow high-visibility vest. He wore a smirking, triumphant expression as Luke walked through the door.

"Glad to see you prioritized your career, Bennett," Vance said smoothly, tossing a thick blue binder onto the desk. "I need your stamp on these altered structural blueprints immediately. We switched suppliers for the concrete support beams to save fifteen percent on the budget."

Luke frowned, pulling the blueprints toward him. He opened the file and began scrutinizing the engineering specifications. Within two minutes, his eyes widened in absolute horror.

"Are you insane, Vance?" Luke slammed his hand down on the table. "These revised load-bearing calculations use substandard steel reinforcement mesh! This design fails the minimum seismic safety threshold for King County! If an earthquake hits Seattle, this building could suffer catastrophic structural failure!"

Vance’s smug smile vanished, replaced by a cold, predatory stare. "It meets the minimum code if you use the relaxed commercial exemptions, Luke. It saves this company two million dollars. Just sign the damn stamp."

"I'm not signing off on a death trap," Luke said sternly, pulling his personal engineering seal back toward his chest. "I built my career on integrity, Vance. I will never sign off on fraudulent safety reports."

Vance stepped uncomfortably close to Luke, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "Listen to me very carefully, Bennett. You sign those papers, or I fire you for gross insubordination right now. I'll make sure your termination is flagged for professional misconduct. You'll never get another engineering job in this state, and your insurance vanishes at midnight. How are you going to pay for your brain-damaged baby's medical bills then?"

Luke’s blood boiled. The urge to punch Vance directly in the face was almost overwhelming, but the image of Caleb lying in the NICU flashed in his mind. He couldn't go to jail. He couldn't lose his family's livelihood.

"Give me until five o'clock to review the safety stress tests," Luke said, forcing his voice to remain dead silent and steady. "If the secondary stress tests pass, I'll consider it. If they fail, I'm taking this directly to the state building inspector."

Vance sneered, confident he had backed Luke into a corner. "Five o'clock, Bennett. Not a minute later."

Luke took the blueprints and walked straight out to his truck. He immediately pulled out his laptop, opened a secure drive, and began copying every single fraudulent document, email, and cost-cutting memo Vance had ever sent him regarding the Bellevue high-rise project.

Luke wasn't just an engineer; he was a father fighting for his family's survival. If Vance wanted a war, Luke was going to give him one—but he needed absolute proof to destroy Vance before Vance destroyed him.

Meanwhile, back at Harborview Medical Center, Nurse Denise entered Caleb's room to perform a routine check on his intravenous line. But as she leaned over the incubator, she noticed something horribly wrong.

Caleb’s heart rate had suddenly spiked to a dangerous two hundred beats per minute, and his skin was turning a mottled, bluish gray.

The medical alarms began to scream.
