Chapter 20 - The Forever Promise

As the sun began to set over the Pacific Ocean, casting deep purple and gold hues across the Seattle sky, the party guests slowly said their goodbyes and headed home.
The house became quiet once again.
After a warm bath, Caleb was dressed in his favorite footie pajamas featuring little blue dinosaurs. Luke carried him into the nursery and rocked him gently in the plush chair while singing a soft acoustic lullaby. Caleb’s thick eyelashes fluttered shut, his small, rhythmic breaths filling the dim room.
Luke carefully laid Caleb into his crib, pulling the soft blanket up over his shoulders.
Rachel walked into the room, stepping softly on the plush rug. She leaned over the crib rail and kissed Caleb’s warm forehead, smelling the sweet baby lotion on his skin.
"Goodnight, my little miracle," she whispered lovingly.
They turned out the main overhead light, leaving only the soft, warm glow of the green dinosaur nightlight illuminating the corner of the room.
As Luke and Rachel turned to walk out into the hallway, they paused in the doorway.
Mason was standing there, holding his favorite blue blanket under his arm.
"Mason?" Luke smiled softly, crouching down in front of his eight-year-old son. "What are you doing, buddy? You're a big third-grader now. You aren't going to drag your sleeping bag onto the floor again, are you?"
Mason looked up at his father with big, bright brown eyes, then looked past him toward the white crib where Caleb lay sleeping so peacefully.
Mason shook his head with a proud, happy smile. "Nope. I don't need the sleeping bag anymore, Dad."
"You don't?" Rachel asked gently.
"Nope," Mason said confidently, folding his blanket over his shoulder. "Caleb knows he's home now. He's never gonna forget."
Mason stepped up to the crib on his tiptoes one last time. He reached his small arm through the wooden bars and gently patted Caleb’s soft blonde hair.
"Goodnight, Caleb," Mason whispered softly. "I'm right down the hall if you need me. Remember... brothers protect each other forever."
Caleb gave a tiny, contented sigh in his sleep, his little hand reaching out in his dreams to curl around his older brother's finger.
Mason smiled, stepped back down, and walked proudly down the hallway to his own bedroom.
Luke wrapped his arm tightly around Rachel’s shoulders, pulling her against his side. They stood together in the soft, warm light of the nursery doorway, listening to the gentle, steady sound of their son breathing peacefully in the quiet room.
There were no flashing red lights.
There were no blaring medical alarms.
There were no cold hospital lights.
