Chapter 17 - The Plot Twist

The dismissal of the CPS complaint was a massive victory, but Luke knew that as long as Vance Sterling was free on bail, his family would never truly be safe from Vance's desperate, unhinged attacks.
That evening, David Vance—Luke's attorney friend—arrived at the Bennett home with a heavy briefcase and a extremely dark expression on his face.
"Luke, Rachel, we have a serious situation," David said as he sat down at the dining table. "I ran a background trace on the private investigator Vance Sterling hired to file that fake CPS report."
"Who is he?" Luke asked, clutching his fists.
David pulled out a thick file folder and laid a photo on the table. "His name is Marcus Cole. He's a former disgraced detective who specializes in dirty corporate intimidation tactics. But that's not the twist."
David leaned forward, looking directly at Rachel. "Marcus Cole didn't just file the fake report last week, Rachel. He has been watching your family for almost a year."
Rachel gasped, covering her mouth. "What do you mean?!"
David opened the file, revealing surveillance photos of Rachel when she was eight months pregnant, walking in the park with Mason. "Vance Sterling hired Marcus Cole months before Caleb was even born. Vance knew Luke was investigating the Bellevue high-rise project's safety violations. Vance wanted leverage over Luke."
Luke’s eyes widened in sudden, horrifying realization. "Oh my God... the night Rachel went into emergency labor..."
David nodded slowly, his face grim. "The night Rachel went into labor, she was driving home from the grocery store when a black SUV aggressively tailgated her through a dark intersection, forcing her to hit the brakes sharply and swerve off the road. Do you remember that, Rachel?"
Rachel went dead still, her memory flashing back to that terrifying rainy evening. "Yes! A black car cut me off! I had to slam on the brakes so hard the seatbelt crushed my stomach! An hour later, I started bleeding and went into emergency labor!"
"That wasn't an accidental reckless driver," David revealed sternly. "That was Marcus Cole in a rental vehicle. Vance Sterling ordered him to stage a minor traffic scare to stress you out and distract Luke from finishing his engineering audit. They didn't mean to cause an umbilical cord prolapse, but Vance's order directly caused the medical trauma that almost killed Caleb."
The room fell into an utterly deafening silence.
Rachel began shaking violently, tears of pure rage spilling over her cheeks. Luke stood up so fast his chair flew backward, crashing onto the hardwood floor.
"Vance caused Caleb's cardiac arrest?" Luke whispered, his voice vibrating with dangerous, lethal fury. "He almost killed my son before he was even born?!"

"Yes," David said firmly, standing up and putting a hand on Luke's chest to calm him down. "And because of Marcus Cole's recent surveillance photos, the FBI just executed a federal search warrant on Cole's office. They found the original encrypted text messages from Vance Sterling explicitly ordering the vehicle strike."
David smiled a fierce, deadly smile. "Vance Sterling isn't just going to prison for financial fraud anymore, Luke. Tomorrow morning, federal prosecutors are upgrading his indictment to attempted murder and felony child endangerment."
