Chapter 6 - Unseen Shadows

While Caleb fought for his life in the NICU, dark clouds were gathering outside the hospital walls.

Luke worked as a mid-level project engineer for Sterling Construction, a massive commercial development firm in downtown Seattle. He had taken emergency medical leave the day Caleb was born, but on the second week of Caleb's hospitalization, Luke's phone began ringing incessantly.

The caller was Vance Sterling, the ruthless, arrogant heir to the company who had recently taken over as head of executive operations. Vance was a man who measured human worth strictly in billable hours and profit margins. He had never liked Luke, primarily because Luke refused to sign off on cut-rate building materials that violated safety codes.

Luke stepped into a quiet stairwell near the NICU to answer the fifth call of the morning.

"Luke, where the hell are you?" Vance’s sharp, condescending voice blasted through the speaker. "The Bellevue high-rise project is two weeks behind schedule. I need you on site today to approve the structural foundation framing."

"Vance, I told you, my newborn son is currently in critical condition in the NICU," Luke said, rubbing his exhausted eyes. "He almost died at birth. I'm on emergency family leave."

Vance let out an irritated, dismissive sigh. "Look, Bennett, I feel for your personal drama, I really do. But business doesn't stop because your kid has health issues. You've been gone for two weeks. The board is questioning your commitment to this firm. If you aren't on that construction site by tomorrow morning at eight, I'm replacing you as lead engineer. And good luck paying those astronomical hospital bills without your health insurance."

Luke’s jaw clenched so hard his teeth hurt. "Are you seriously threatening my job while my child is on life support?"

"I'm giving you a reality check," Vance snapped back coldly. "Be on site tomorrow, or turn in your company badge. Your choice." The line went dead.

Luke leaned his head against the cold concrete wall of the stairwell, his hands trembling with rage and sheer exhaustion. The daily hospital costs for Caleb’s intensive care unit were already compounding into tens of thousands of dollars. Losing his job now meant losing their medical insurance, which would completely destroy his family financially.

He walked slowly back to Caleb's room, trying his absolute best to mask his panic. But Rachel knew him far too well. She noticed the tight posture of his shoulders and the pale hue of his face the moment he walked through the door.

"What happened?" Rachel asked softly, placing her hand over his. "Was that work?"

"It was Vance," Luke admitted quietly, looking down at Caleb sleeping in the incubator. "He's demanding I come back to the job site tomorrow. He threatened to terminate my position and strip our medical coverage if I don't show up."

Rachel’s eyes flashed with anger. "He can't do that! You filed for official family leave!"

"In this state, Vance can drag the legal paperwork out for months while cutting my benefits immediately," Luke said, his voice heavy with defeat. "We can't risk losing our insurance right now, Rachel. Caleb's treatments are costing a fortune."

Rachel looked from her husband to her tiny son fighting inside the plastic box. "Then go," she said softly, though it broke her heart. "Go for a few hours. Handle the site inspection, protect your job, and come straight back. I'll stay right here with Caleb and Mason."

Luke leaned down and kissed her deeply, pulling her close. "I'm so sorry, Rachel. I feel like I'm abandoning you both."

"You aren't abandoning anyone," Rachel whispered, holding his neck. "You're fighting for us. Just like Caleb is fighting."
