Chapter 9 - The Power of a Promise

"Son, you can't be in here right now!" a respiratory therapist shouted over the blaring equipment alarms, trying to gently block Mason.

Mason dodged right past the doctor’s legs. He climbed up onto the metal step stool beside the warmer, grabbing the outer frame with both of his small hands.

Caleb’s face was dark purple. Dr. Sato was carefully trying to insert a tiny breathing tube down the newborn's throat, but Caleb’s airway was swelling fast.

"Caleb!" Mason yelled loudly, his voice piercing cleanly through the frantic noise of medical staff and screaming monitors.

The baby’s tiny, struggling body gave a sudden, sharp jerk at the sound of his brother's voice.

"Caleb, listen to me!" Mason shouted, tears streaming down his face, his eyes locked entirely on his brother’s blue lips. "You promised! You promised you were coming home to see my dinosaur lamp! You can't break the promise, Caleb! Brothers don't break promises!"

Dr. Sato’s hands remained perfectly steady. Using the exact split second when Caleb relaxed at the sound of Mason's voice, Dr. Sato slid the endotracheal tube smoothly past the baby’s vocal cords into his trachea.

"Tube is in!" Dr. Sato announced urgently. "Hook up the ventilator now!"

Nurse Denise quickly attached the manual bag and began squeezing air directly into Caleb's lungs.

Compress. Release. Compress. Release.

Slowly, agonizingly, the dark purple color began to fade from Caleb’s small face, replaced by a pale, healthy pink. The harsh red lights on the vital monitors stopped flashing, and the alarm quieted down. The oxygen saturation numbers began creeping steadily upward: sixty percent... seventy percent... eighty-five percent... ninety-four percent.

Caleb’s heart rate stabilized back down to a normal, steady one hundred and forty beats per minute.

The room breathed a collective, overwhelming sigh of relief. Dr. Sato wiped a heavy coat of sweat from his forehead with his upper arm, letting out a long breath. He looked down at seven-year-old Mason, who was still standing on the step stool, his small hands holding tightly onto the edge of the warmer.

"You have impeccable timing, young man," Dr. Sato said, his voice filled with profound respect.

At that exact second, Luke burst into the NICU room, his chest heaving, his face pale with absolute terror. "Is he... is he alive?!"

Rachel rushed in right behind him, collapsing against Luke’s chest.

Dr. Sato turned to face them, putting his hands on his hips. "He had a severe vocal cord spasm that completely blocked his airway. It was extremely close, Luke. But we managed to intubate him in time. He's stable now."

Luke held Rachel tightly as she sobbed tears of immense relief against his neck. Then Luke walked over to Mason, lifted his older son off the step stool, and pulled him into a tight, crushing hug.

"You did it again, buddy," Luke choked out, kissing the side of Mason's head. "You saved him again."

Mason rested his head on Luke’s shoulder, staring at Caleb sleeping peacefully under the mechanical breather. "I told you, Dad," Mason murmured softly. "Brothers protect each other."
