Chapter 16 - The Surprise Inspection

Fifteen minutes later, a stark black government sedan pulled up to the curb outside the Bennett home, accompanied by a Seattle Police cruiser.

Agent Evelyn Vance—a tall, stern woman with graying hair pulled into a tight bun—walked up the porch steps alongside Officer Miller, a burly police officer with a taser strapped to his vest.

Luke opened the door before they could even ring the bell, his jaw set in a hard, determined line. Rachel stood directly behind him, holding Caleb tightly against her chest, her body trembling with a mixture of rage and fear.

"Mr. and Mrs. Bennett," Agent Vance said, holding up her official credential badge. "I am Agent Vance from CPS. We are here to conduct an immediate welfare check on Caleb Bennett."

"Come in," Luke said stepping aside, his voice dead flat. "My wife and I have nothing to hide. But I want it on official record that this complaint is a malicious, fraudulent act of witness intimidation orchestrated by Vance Sterling, who is currently under federal indictment based on my testimony."

Agent Vance didn't comment. She stepped into the entryway, her sharp eyes scanning every square inch of the pristine living room. She pulled out a clipboard and a pen. "Where is the infant's nursery?"

"Right down this hallway," Rachel said, her voice shaking as she led the way.

Agent Vance inspected the nursery thoroughly. She opened the refrigerator in the kitchen to check for proper formula and food supplies, checked the safety locks on the cabinets, and meticulously reviewed Caleb's pediatric vaccination records, which Rachel had laid out on the dining table.

"The complaint specifically states that Caleb missed his critical six-month neurological evaluation at Harborview Medical Center," Agent Vance noted, tapping her pen against the clipboard.

"That evaluation was rescheduled for tomorrow morning because Dr. Kenji Sato was called into emergency surgery last week!" Rachel practically shouted, pulling out her smartphone. "Here is the official confirmation text from Harborview! Call Dr. Sato directly right now! He delivered Caleb! He knows our family!"

Agent Vance pulled out her cell phone, dialed the hospital number, and placed the call on speaker.

Within two minutes, Dr. Kenji Sato’s deep, authoritative voice boomed through the room. "This is Dr. Sato. What is this regarding?"

"Dr. Sato, this is Agent Evelyn Vance with Child Protective Services," the social worker stated. "I am currently at the home of Luke and Rachel Bennett conducting a neglect investigation regarding Caleb Bennett."

Dr. Sato went completely silent on the phone for three seconds. When he spoke again, his tone was laced with pure, terrifying fury.

"Are you out of your mind, Agent Vance?" Dr. Sato demanded harshly over the speaker. "Luke and Rachel Bennett are among the most dedicated, loving, and attentive parents I have ever encountered in my twenty-five years of practicing medicine! That baby is alive today solely because of their unwavering devotion and the miraculous care of his older brother!"

Agent Vance blinked, visibly caught off guard by the physician's fierce defense. "Dr. Sato, the complaint alleged prenatal substance abuse—"

"That allegation is a complete, libelous fabrication!" Dr. Sato interrupted sternly. "I personally reviewed every single tox screen performed on Mrs. Bennett during her emergency admission. They were one hundred percent clean! If you remove that child from that home, I will personally testify against your agency in court tomorrow morning!"

Agent Vance slowly hung up the phone. She looked at Rachel, who was crying tears of anger, and then at Luke, who stood like a protective shield in front of his family.

"It appears," Agent Vance said quietly, closing her clipboard, "that my agency was weaponized as part of a personal vendetta against your family. The complaint is officially dismissed as unsubstantiated and fraudulent."
