Chapter 2 - The Red File Opens

The blue light from the massive projection screens cast an eerie, clinical glow over the five hundred guests seated in the grand ballroom. Absolute, suffocating silence gripped the room; you could hear the faint hum of the overhead air conditioning units and the terrified intake of breath from the marketing directors in the front row.
“Look at exhibit A on the main screen,” Nathaniel’s voice cut through the stillness like a surgeon’s blade, deep, calm, and utterly merciless. “Fourteen million dollars siphoned directly from Halcyon’s research and development reserves over the past eight months, funneled through an overseas shell corporation named Meridian Trust. And who is the sole legal beneficiary of Meridian Trust? Let’s turn to page four.”
Adrian lunged forward toward the podium, his face flushed with a desperate, mottled red. “This is a complete forgery! Nathaniel, you can’t trust these documents! Evelyn fabricated them out of sheer spite because our marriage has been deteriorating for months—”
“Deteriorating marriage?” I stepped up beside my father, wiping the small trace of blood from my cheek with a silk handkerchief. “Adrian, you haven’t worn your wedding ring since last November. You left it on the nightstand in Vanessa’s downtown apartment. Would you like me to read aloud the text messages where you discussed purchasing a luxury penthouse using corporate marketing expenses?”
Vanessa’s carefully cultivated composure finally shattered. She rushed forward, her high heels clicking frantically against the stage. “You bitch! You planned this entire thing! You set us up from the very beginning!”
“Set you up?” I turned to face her, my gaze as cold as winter ice. “Did I force you to sleep with my husband on my father's private yacht? Did I force you to falsify quarterly earnings reports so Adrian could trigger his stock option bonuses ahead of schedule? You both built this trap with your own greed. My father and I simply opened the door.”
Nathaniel raised his hand slightly. At that signal, two private security operatives in sharp black suits stepped out from the wings, blocking the main ballroom doors. Nobody was leaving this building until every single page of the red file had been exposed to the light.

“Adrian,” my father said quietly, leaning over the glass podium and staring down at his treacherous son-in-law. “You had charm, ambition, and a silver tongue. But you mistook my daughter’s patience for weakness, and you mistook my retirement for absence. Halcyon Dynamics is a family empire, Adrian. And you were never anything more than a temporary employee.”
Adrian’s knees trembled visibly. He looked out across the audience, expecting support from the regional directors and vice presidents who had fawned over him all evening. But one by one, every single executive averted their eyes, terrified of being incinerated by association. The golden boy had fallen, and the fire was burning out of control.
