Chapter 3 - Echoes in the Executive Lounge

The security detail escorted Adrian and Vanessa into the private executive lounge adjacent to the grand ballroom while the rest of the staff was dismissed under strict confidentiality orders. Within minutes, the vast hall cleared, leaving behind scattered champagne glasses and the cold glow of financial indictments on the screens.

Inside the lounge, the atmosphere was thick with panic. Adrian slumped into a leather armchair, staring blankly at his Italian leather shoes. Vanessa paced furiously near the mahogany wet bar, her breathing ragged and shallow.

“We can fight this legally!” Vanessa hissed, turning toward Adrian with wild eyes. “Your lawyers can file for an injunction! They can’t just seize our assets based on a red folder! It’s hearsay and corporate intimidation!”

“Shut up, Vanessa,” Adrian muttered, his voice dead and hollow. “Just shut your mouth.”

“Shut up? Adrian, wake up! If your father-in-law freezes our accounts, we are destitute! Every car, every investment portfolio, every property—it’s all tied to Halcyon credit lines!”

The heavy oak doors swung open wide, and my father walked in, followed by senior corporate counsel Marcus Vance. Marcus tossed a thick stack of legal documents onto the coffee table right in front of Adrian.

“Sign the voluntary resignation and total asset forfeiture agreement, Adrian,” Marcus said evenly, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses. “If you sign now, Mr. Grant agrees to withhold immediate criminal prosecution for grand larceny tonight. If you refuse, federal indictments will be filed within the hour.”

Adrian looked up, his eyes bloodshot and watery. He looked at me, his expression twisting into a pathetic whine. “Evelyn... please. Remember our anniversary in Paris? Remember how much we loved each other before your father interfered?”

“My father didn't ruin us, Adrian,” I said, stepping closer and looking down into the eyes of the man who had shoved me to the floor. “You did that the moment you decided my family’s legacy was yours to steal. Sign the papers.”

“Evelyn, don't be cold,” Vanessa intervened, flashing a sickly sweet, desperate smile. “Women should stick together against these old corporate men, right? You understand how ruthless they can be—”

“Do not speak to me about solidarity,” I snapped, my voice freezing the air in the room. “You wore my clothes, slept in my bed, and laughed when I was shoved off that stage. You are nothing, Vanessa. Sign your name.”

With shaking fingers, Adrian picked up the Montblanc pen and signed away his stolen empire.
