Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

The executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor was bathed in morning sunlight. Twelve leather chairs surrounded the massive marble conference table, and every single seat was occupied. As I pushed open the double doors wearing a sharp charcoal pantsuit, the entire board stood up in unison.
There were no polite nods or hesitant smiles this time. There was only absolute, reverent respect.
“Welcome back, Madam CEO,” murmured Julian Vance, gesturing toward the high-backed leather chair at the head of the table—the seat Adrian had occupied with such arrogance just yesterday.
I walked to the head of the table, resting my hands on the cool marble surface. “Thank you, Julian. Please, sit down.”
As the directors took their seats, my mind drifted briefly to how we had arrived at this exact moment. Five years ago, when Adrian first joined Halcyon as a junior acquisitions manager, he played the devoted partner to perfection. It wasn't until two years into our marriage that the cracks appeared—receipts for jewelry I never received, mysterious hotel charges, and a growing arrogance.
When Dad and I discovered the first discrepancy in the overseas accounts eighteen months ago, my heart broke not just because of the corporate betrayal, but because of the petty, cheap reality of my husband’s character. He wasn't a master criminal; he was a climber with expensive tastes and zero loyalty.
“Evelyn?” Julian’s voice pulled me back to the present. “We have received an inquiry from the financial press regarding Adrian Cole’s termination. How should PR handle the statement?”

“Tell them the truth,” I said calmly. “State clearly that Adrian Cole was terminated for gross financial misconduct and breach of fiduciary duty. Attach the summary of the Meridian Trust wire transfers to the press release.”
A murmur of approval rippled through the room. The era of secrets at Halcyon Dynamics was officially over.
