By noon, the press release detailing Adrian’s embezzlement had hit Wall Street. Halcyon stock rebounded sharply as investors realized the founding family had purged the corruption.
In a cheap motel room off the Queensboro Bridge, Adrian Cole sat staring at a portable television screen broadcasting live footage of Halcyon Tower, displaying my face beneath the bold headline: *Evelyn Grant-Cole Assumes Control as Halcyon CEO.*
“Turn that off!” Adrian roared, hurling a plastic water bottle at the television screen.
Vanessa sat on the edge of the sagging double bed, wrapped in a cheap terrycloth bathrobe. “We’re locked out of everything, Adrian. My credit cards were declined at the grocery store downstairs.”
“Your lawyer?” Adrian laughed bitterly. “My lawyers are refusing to speak to me unless I pay fifty thousand upfront! Do you know how much cash I have left? Four hundred dollars!”
“This is your fault!” Vanessa snapped. “You swore Nathaniel Grant was losing his mind!”
