Chapter 10 - Caught in the Web

Inside the dreary, iron-barred holding cell of the county jail, Jason Vance sat on a thin vinyl mattress, shivering from the damp cold. The sharp luxury suits, custom Italian shoes, and high-society dining were distant memories. Now he wore faded yellow prison scrub pants and a thin cotton shirt stamped with inmate registration numbers.

His cellmate, a hulking man with razor wire tattoos covering his arms, sat on the opposite bunk, filing down a sharpened piece of metal against the concrete wall with a soft, ominous scraping sound.

Jason hugged his knees to his chest, his mind racing through the horrific wreckage of his life. In less than six months, he had gone from a rising corporate CEO to a penniless federal prisoner facing thirty years behind bars.

He thought of Emily. He remembered how quiet she used to be at the dinner table, how she would smile gently when he talked about his business dreams, how she had patiently tolerated his endless complaints. He had thought she was weak. He had thought she was plain, boring, and useless.

Now he realized the shocking truth: she was a titan. She was a Brigadier General who commanded warships, satellite networks, and elite soldiers. She had a twenty-million-dollar fortune that could have elevated his entire life, yet she had kept it hidden because he was too foolish, arrogant, and untrustworthy to be trusted with it.

"Hey... fresh meat," his cellmate growled, stopping his scraping motion and looking at Jason with cold, lifeless eyes.

Jason swallowed hard, backing into the corner of the cell. "W-what?"

"Got a message for you from your corporate buddies in offshore logistics," the inmate sneered, slowly standing up and slipping the sharpened metal spike into his palm. "They said to tell you... loose ends don't get to testify."

Jason's heart seized in terror. "No... please! I don't know anything! I didn't tell the feds anything!"

The inmate lunged forward, grabbing Jason by the throat and pinning him against the concrete wall, raising the heavy metal spike high. Jason screamed in blind terror, closing his eyes, waiting for the lethal blow to tear into his chest.

BOOM!

The heavy steel door of the cell block blew inward with an explosive flash-bang. Heavy boot heels thundered down the concrete corridor.

"GO! GO! GO! FEDERAL TACTICAL TEAM! ON THE GROUND NOW!"

Before the inmate could strike, two elite military operators dressed in black tactical armor burst into the cell. One operator executed a swift tactical takedown, slamming the assassin to the floor and disarming him in seconds, while the second operator pulled Jason out into the hallway, pinning him against the wall.

"Inmate Jason Vance?" the operator barked through his helmet radio.

"Y-yes! Yes! Don't kill me! Please don't kill me!" Jason wept hysterically, collapsing into a heap on the floor.

The strike team leader keyed his radio microphone. "Command, this is Alpha Lead. Target Jason Vance secured without injury. We are extracting him to Fort Meade Brig now."

A calm, crystal-clear female voice echoed through the tactical comms speaker on the officer's vest--a voice Jason recognized instantly.

"Copy, Alpha Lead," Emily's voice sounded across the radio channel, steady, powerful, and completely unbothered. "Transport the prisoner under maximum security protocol. Operational debriefing will commence upon arrival."

Jason lay on the cold corridor floor, crying uncontrollably as the tactical operators hauled him to his feet. He had just been saved from certain death by the very woman he had left bleeding on his kitchen floor.
