Chapter 3 - Unmasking the Lie

The silence inside the hospital room was deafening. The only sound was the faint, rhythmic beep of my heart monitor and the quiet breathing of tiny Clara in my arms.
Jason's eyes were wide, bulging with utter disbelief. He looked at Chloe, whose arrogant demeanor had completely shattered into sheer terror. She remained frozen at military attention, sweat glistening along her hairline.
"Chloe..." Jason stammered, his voice cracking as he grabbed her arm. "What is he talking about? You told me you were an heiress to an international shipping conglomerate! You told me your father owned the maritime terminal!"
Chloe didn't answer him. Her eyes were fixed straight ahead, staring at General Vance. "Sir, I can explain--"
"Silence, Major!" General Vance commanded, his voice cutting through the air like a steel blade. "You are currently in breach of active duty deployment orders. Furthermore, Internal Security has been monitoring your unauthorized financial transactions with private Defense contractors over the past six months."
General Vance turned back to me. "General Carter, we have reason to believe that Major Miller deliberately infiltrated civilian commercial sectors targeting individuals connected to government defense procurement--specifically your estranged husband's logistics firm."
The words hit Jason like a physical blow. He stumbled backward until his back hit the wall. "Infiltrated? Target? No... no, this is insane! We met at a private charity gala! She flew me out on a private jet!"
"A private jet funded by stolen corporate shell accounts currently under federal investigation," I said softly. "Jason, you thought you were climbing the social ladder by betraying your wife. You didn't realize you were being played by an operative who needed your company's security credentials to bypass military audits."
"No... no!" Jason yelled, his face turning crimson. "You're lying! You're just a paper-pusher!"
General Vance stepped forward. "General Carter is the chief director of Special Operations Task Force Omega. Her cover identity was classified at the highest level of National Security to protect her life and her operations. While you were complaining about her missing dinner, she was coordinating covert counter-intelligence operations across three continents."
Jason's knees seemed to buckle. "And... and the money? You never made real money..."
"I never cared about showcasing wealth," I said quietly. "My grandfather was General Edward Carter. Three months ago, he passed away, leaving his entire estate--twenty million dollars--in a trust designated for me. Federal law prohibited disclosing trust assets under active counter-espionage review."
Jason looked like he had been struck by lightning. Twenty million dollars. A rank that placed me among the top tier of military leadership.
"Emily..." Jason choked out, taking a frantic step toward my bed. "Emily, baby... please! I didn't know! I was tricked by her! I love you, Emily! We have a baby together!"
"Do not step any closer to General Carter," General Vance ordered firmly.
The two armed Military Police officers immediately stepped between Jason and my bed.
"Jason," I said coldly. "Thirty-six hours ago, you threw my hospital bag across the floor while I was screaming in labor. You told me I was dead weight. You stood on our porch and watched me leave in the rain."
"I was stupid! Please, Emily!" Jason wept openly now. "Let's go home! We can raise Clara together!"
"There is no 'we'," I replied flatly. "You wanted a woman with money, prestige, and power. Well, you found her. Unfortunately for you, she's about to be escorted to a military brig, and you are about to face a federal grand jury."
May you like
General Vance nodded to the MPs. "Escort Major Miller into federal custody. Escort Mr. Vance off the military base immediately. Revoke his security clearance, and freeze all pending contracts with his firm."
As the officers grabbed Jason's arm to drag him out, he thrashed frantically, screaming my name into the empty corridor.
