Chapter 6 - Jason's Downward Spiral

The autumn wind blew sharply through the concrete canyons of downtown as Jason Vance stood on the sidewalk outside the glass tower that bore his family's name: Vance Logistics Headquarters.

Only three weeks ago, he had walked through those revolving doors as the triumphant chief executive officer of a rapidly expanding logistics empire. Today, yellow federal seizure tape crisscrossed the main entrance doors, and two armed federal marshals stood guard near the lobby elevators.

"You can't do this!" Jason shouted at his chief financial officer, who was hastily carrying a cardboard box full of personal files out to his car. "Where are the board members? Why isn't anyone answering my calls?!"

The CFO stopped, looking at Jason with an expression combining disgust and deep contempt. "The board dissolved the executive committee two hours ago, Jason. The Carter Family Trust refused to renew our land lease. We have forty-eight hours to clear out our physical assets before the property reverts fully to General Carter's estate."

"General Carter..." Jason muttered, staggering back as if slapped. "She can't do this! It's abuse of power!"

"She didn't do this, Jason. YOU did this!" the CFO snapped, throwing his box into the trunk of his sedan. "You brought that fake socialite Chloe into our corporate infrastructure without vetting her! You signed shipping manifests for illegal military components! Federal prosecutors are freezing every corporate bank account as we speak! The company is bankrupt, Jason! You are ruined!"

The CFO slammed his trunk shut, got into his car, and sped away, leaving Jason standing alone on the cold pavement.

Desperate, sweating profusely despite the freezing air, Jason pulled his phone from his pocket. His personal bank accounts were completely frozen by court order. His black credit card had been declined at a coffee shop an hour earlier. He was virtually penniless, carrying less than eighty dollars in cash in his wallet.

He stumbled down the street toward the affluent residential neighborhood where our former marital home was located. He reasoned that if he could just get inside, grab his spare passport, his collection of luxury watches, and some designer clothes, he could sell them to pay for a criminal defense lawyer.

When he reached the wrought-iron front gates of the house, however, his heart sank into his stomach.

Two heavy military transport vehicles were parked in the driveway. Armed private security officers wearing dark tactical uniforms were patrolling the perimeter. A high-tech digital security keypad had been installed at the front door, replacing the old lock set.

As Jason approached the gate, a burly security officer stepped forward, locking eyes with him. "Stop right there, Mr. Vance. You are in violation of the five-hundred-yard civil protection order."

"This is MY house!" Jason screamed, his voice cracking with desperation. "I bought this house! My name is on the deed!"

"As of eight o'clock this morning, the county land court recognized General Emily Carter as sole title holder pursuant to emergency spousal eviction remedies," the officer stated coldly. "Furthermore, all personal property inside has been cataloged. If you step onto this driveway, I will arrest you for felony trespass."

At that exact moment, the front door of the house opened. Mrs. Alvarez stepped out onto the porch, holding small Clara in a pink fleece blanket. Behind her walked Major Daniel Reed, dressed in his military duty uniform, carrying a small box containing my remaining personal books.

Jason caught sight of Major Reed standing near the doorway where he himself used to stand. Rage, envy, and humiliation boiled over inside him.

"Who the hell is that?!" Jason roared through the iron gate, pointing wildly at Major Reed. "Is that your new boyfriend, Emily?! You replaced me already?!"

Major Reed walked down the front path slowly, stopping ten feet from the gate, looking at Jason with calm, immovable authority. "Mr. Vance, I am General Carter's Chief of Staff. And I strongly advise you to lower your voice before I have the local authorities add harassment to your growing list of legal indictments."

"Tell her to come out and face me!" Jason wept, clutching the iron bars of the gate. "I made a mistake! I was stupid! Tell her I'll do anything! Just don't destroy me!"

Major Reed looked at Jason with cold disdain. "General Carter isn't destroying you, Mr. Vance. She is simply letting you experience the consequences of your own character. You threw her out when she was giving birth because you thought she had no power. Now you see who she truly is, and you cannot bear the sight of your own insignificance."

Major Reed turned his back and walked back into the house, leaving Jason screaming hysterically into the empty street until the distant wail of police sirens signaled that his time was up.
