Chapter 13 - Betrayal at the Highest Level

With Jason sentenced and locked away in a federal facility, the primary threat to my personal life was resolved, but the operational threat against Task Force Omega reached its dangerous climax.
Late on a rainy Thursday night, I sat in my command sanctuary at the base, reviewing the cyber-intrusion logs that had targeted my grandfather's trust fund and the military logistics database.
Major Daniel Reed walked into the room, locking the heavy security door behind him. His face was unusually grave.
"General," Reed said in a low voice. "Our internal security team finished tracing the digital footprint of the mole who facilitated Major Chloe Miller's infiltration."
"Who is it?" I asked, setting my stylus down.
"It's Colonel Thomas Croft," Reed revealed grimly. "Head of Defense Procurement for the regional sector."
I sat back in my leather chair, taking a deep breath. Colonel Croft was a senior officer who had worked alongside my grandfather twenty years ago. He was a trusted insider who had access to high-level security clearances and financial routing networks.
"Croft was deep in gambling debt to the same Eastern European syndicate," Reed explained, placing a secure file on my desk. "When he realized your grandfather left you twenty million dollars, he helped Chloe target Jason. They planned to drain your trust through fraudulent legal claims filed during your divorce, using Jason as their clueless puppet."
"And when Jason failed to secure the money during the divorce proceedings, Croft tried to breach the trust directly using his military network access," I realized.
"Correct," Reed said. "And now that Croft knows we are closing in on him, he has taken a desperate turn. Surveillance shows he left the base thirty minutes ago heading toward your private off-base estate in Oakridge."
My heart instantly turned to ice. "Clara..."
"Mrs. Alvarez and your daughter are at the house with your private security detail," Reed said. "I've already dispatched Team Alpha, but Croft has high-level security clearance codes that can override your estate's automated security gates!"

Without a second's hesitation, I grabbed my tactical sidearm from the wall vault, strapped it into my shoulder holster, and grabbed my jacket.
"Let's move, Daniel!" I commanded.
