Chapter 17 - Rebuilding from Ashes

Spring turned into summer, and life at my Oakridge estate settled into a blissful, peaceful rhythm.
With the trust fund fully cleared and under my control, I established the General Edward Carter Foundation--a twenty-million-dollar charitable organization dedicated to providing housing, legal aid, and emergency support for pregnant military veterans and spouses in crisis.
Mrs. Alvarez was named the senior community director of the foundation, receiving a generous salary and a beautiful newly renovated cottage on my estate grounds.
"Emily, dear," Mrs. Alvarez said one morning as we sat on the back patio drinking coffee while Clara crawled on a soft blanket on the lawn. "Look at this foundation report. We've already helped fifty young mothers secure housing this month."
"Grandfather would be so proud," I smiled, holding Clara as she pulled herself up on my knees, letting out sweet baby giggles.
Just then, the front driveway gates opened, and Daniel's personal civilian car pulled up. He stepped out, wearing a sharp navy blazer and trousers, carrying a large bundle of fresh yellow roses--my favorite flowers.
"Good morning, ladies," Daniel smiled, walking onto the patio and handing the flowers to me, before kneeling down to give Clara a high-five, which she delighted in returning with a squeal.
"Good morning, Daniel," I said, my heart warming at the sight of him.
Over the past few months, Daniel had officially transitioned out of my direct chain of command to assume a senior executive role at the Defense Intelligence Agency, allowing us to explore our personal relationship without any military protocol conflicts.
"I brought something for Clara," Daniel said, pulling a tiny custom-made miniature military leather flight jacket from his bag.
Mrs. Alvarez laughed with delight. "Oh, that is precious!"
As Mrs. Alvarez took Clara inside for her afternoon nap, Daniel sat down beside me, taking my hand softly in his.
"Emily," Daniel said gently, looking deep into my eyes. "Next week is the annual Defense Gala at the capital. I was wondering... if you would do me the honor of attending as my date?"
May you like
I looked at him--this man who had protected my back, who had respected my strength, who loved my daughter as his own--and felt a deep, unwavering certainty.
"I would love nothing more, Daniel," I answered softly, leaning in to place a gentle kiss on his cheek.
