Chapter 4 - The Secrets of the Vance Inheritance

By the third day following Clara's birth, I was discharged from the hospital and moved into high-security officer quarters on base. Surrounded by manicured lawns and 24-hour perimeter security, it was a sanctuary compared to the toxic environment Jason had created.

Mrs. Alvarez stayed with me to help care for Clara while I finalized my medical leave. Sitting on the sunlit back patio, I opened a dark leather briefcase presented to me by my grandfather's estate executor, Arthur Montgomery, Esq.

Montgomery was a sharp, silver-haired attorney who had managed the Carter family legal affairs for forty years. He placed a thick stack of legal documents onto the table.

"Your grandfather was a brilliant strategist, Emily," Montgomery said. "When he established the twenty-million-dollar trust, he included a specific clause: 'The beneficiary shall receive full liquid control only upon achieving senior executive rank or upon complete discharge, ensuring no predatory party can manipulate her through financial leverage.'"

"He knew Jason was a risk, didn't he?" I asked softly.

"General Edward Carter met Jason twice," Montgomery replied with a dry smile. "Afterward, he told me, 'That boy doesn't love my granddaughter; he loves what she can provide for his ambition. If he ever thinks she has nothing, his true nature will show.' Jason failed the test catastrophically."

"What is the current status of the trust assets?" I asked.

"The twenty million dollars has been fully cleared and released," Montgomery explained. "In addition, your grandfather owned a majority stake in the holding company that owns the land beneath Vance Logistics' headquarters."

I paused. "Wait. My grandfather owned the land under Jason's company?"

Montgomery smiled wickedly. "Indeed. The commercial lease is set for mandatory renewal next month. Under the terms of the original deed, you have the absolute right to refuse lease renewal."

"What about the house in Oakridge?" I asked.

"Jason filed an emergency occupancy petition claiming you had abandoned the residence," Montgomery chuckled. "However, our counter-motion presented witness testimony proving unlawful eviction of a pregnant spouse in labor. The judge granted you exclusive occupancy rights and froze all joint marital assets."

Just as Montgomery finished speaking, my encrypted phone rang. It was an unknown civilian number. I pressed speakerphone.

"Emily? Emily, please don't hang up!" Jason's frantic, desperate voice came rushing through. "Lawyers showed up at my office with eviction papers! Sheriff's deputies are at our home packing my clothes! Please!"

"Mr. Vance," I said in a cold, measured tone. "You are speaking to Brigadier General Emily Carter. Any communication must go through my counsel."

"Emily, listen to me!" Jason pleaded. "Chloe was working with foreign logistics brokers! Federal agents searched my corporate offices this morning! They took everything! They say my company might be implicated in treason! I didn't know anything, I swear!"

"Whether you knew or not, your greed made you an easy target, Jason," I replied flatly. "You threw me out because you thought I was worthless. Now you face the consequences."

"Emily, please! I love you! You can't keep me away from my baby!"

"You had no interest in your daughter when she was being born," I answered. "Good day, Jason."

I disconnected the call and looked at Montgomery. "Prepare the eviction enforcement. The retribution has only just begun."
